Thanks Tyler. Given Firefly's attention to process and detail I wouldn't have expected otherwise.
I'm looking forward to it also!

Thanks Tyler. Given Firefly's attention to process and detail I wouldn't have expected otherwise.
I'm looking forward to it also!
I've bought enough custom bikes that I fully realize the builders balance their time between communication, marketing, etc and that these things have an impact in how many bikes they can build. I accept that going in and don't have a problem with it.
Having said that, I think everyone who is waiting on a custom frame wants progress to be made on building it. Sorry if you've got a problem with that.
Then why ask that question here? Did you really think there was a chance you were being adversely affected? If you have questions of your builder, contact them directly instead of raising questions about their business here. Tyler and co. at Firefly are very sharp and they wouldn't have taken on any project they couldn't handle masterfully.
I never said things weren't going well. I asked simple question about how they were fitting the adventure bikes into their regular schedule. Tyler gave a great answer. That's it.
I think it was a fair question.
And the answer makes me want a Firefly even more!!
***** Firefly´s are UEBER-professionals!! *****
but I also don't see a big problem to ask the question what was asked.
No problems with any question. No worries one way or the other. Ask them here or ask them directly via phone or email. Either way we'll do our best to answer.
It was a valid question anyway. I know a lot of builders that get themselves into serious pickles with projects that go way over their capacity to deliver. I feel like NAHBS puts a lot of builders in a bad place every year, way worse than most self generated marketing strategies. I would rather pick my own path than pile on with others, although I really love the community surrounding NAHBS, until it makes sense to do it, we won't. For now we will focus our efforts on things that we can control and grow in a reasonable and tangible way. Like an adventure team, for instance.
Stay tuned for the team's launch :: end of March.
To elaborate on the question and why I asked it.
- It was a process question, not a gripe. I was an avid follower of the thread about the process of acquiring, refitting and building out the current Firefly location and an admirer or not only what they did but how they did it. Aside from the fact that I think the bikes are cool, that thread has a lot to do with why I'm in the queue for a Firefly.
- I put the "selfish mode" quotes in the OP mostly as a joke. From a process point of view, it's interesting to me how a small outfit like Firefly or any other small framebuilder balances marketing, developing new products and just doing things that get their juices flowing against the process of delivering to customers. It's a tough balance to strike and as Tyler alluded to above, it's pretty easy to get wrong.
- As I said in the OP, I think the Adventure project is cool. Even if Tyler had replied by saying they made room for the adventure bikes by bumping customer bikes I'd have been OK with that.
- Based on everything I've read about Firefly and my personal experience thus far, if there had been any impact on customer orders by taking on the Adventure project I'd have expected the Firefly guys to reach out to their customers and let them know. Those guys are solid.
- Finally, I've given Firefly about the strongest vote of confidence any of us can give: a deposit for a bike.
So relax everybody, it was just a simple question.
Okay - let's get back to bicycles thanks atmo.
So is there anything special about the Adventure bikes.. like special tubing or whatever? Or these are just like any FF bike that a customer can order? :)
Totally waiting for the launch...

Woo..hoo. Going to check it out now!
Hey Tyler, I was nicely surprised by the view of that one of your ladies on fully doble page on the Spanish Bicisport Magazine. It might seem unrelevant for you as Firefly is well known and many times published, but believe me that here in Spain is not that common, and most magazines would keep focused on the mainstream all well known mass production brands, so seeing one of your jewells is pretty nice and it might be hope for all of us damn spaniards!
Cheers
Tyler and company....I haven't seen any pics in FNL lately...what gives?? I'm going through withdrawls.
Haha! Been crazy busy! I haven't had much time to even surf the net for much besides posting to social media. I've been uploading everything to the Flickr. I'm a little worried that I'll post an epic-computer-meltdown amount of pictures to FNL.... It might set some satellites on fire and explode some remote servers in the desert somewhere... But I'll do it. Prepare thyself by stockpiling balms and salves.
A quick "thanks" to the crew for welcoming me to the shop yesterday. Kevin, Jamie and Tyler is was great to meet you all. I loved the tour and enjoyed seeing the space. Not too big, not too small. Some new tech, and lots of old tech. Perfect.
To any of you out there considering a Firefly, a shop visit will finalize the decision for you. I'll be getting on the list myself in the next few days!
Oh yeah!! Thanks again...

Yoiks!
Tyler, how many of the Bones bikes have been delivered to date?
Is there a common thread as to the type of buyer, or are they all over the place with regards to geography, rider type, etc?
Hey Matt, So far 6 have been delivered and there are a few more at various stages of completion. The part that takes the longest, by far, is the paint process. Eric Bones takes his time with each one, giving each the special attention to detail that make it unique yet recognizable.
As far as the type of rider... the Bones Project has attracted some serious road riders from around the globe. People that are serious about steel, respect and appreciate art and love a limited run project.
The beauty of making custom bikes, not just The Bones Project bikes, but all of them, is that you come to realize that there really isn't a type of person that orders a custom bike, or even just rides bikes in general. Cyclists are so unique and come from such different backgrounds. Cycling is a type of unifier that spans classes, races and sexes. I feel that there are only a handful of activities that bring so many different types of people together in this way.
On that note ::

Tyler, seems like you guys are just killing it all the time, solid work. I'm sure I speak for most of the folks on this forum when I say I'd love to own a Firefly one day!
How many bikes are you guys turning out every week typically? Mostly ti it seems, with the occassional stainless?
Hey, Thanks Dustin! We are on track for 120ish bikes this year. So about 2.5 bikes per week average. Not bad for the 3 of us (Jamie and I in the shop and Kevin up front). We had an employee for a short time (about 2 months) but her schooling took priority so we are looking to fill her position in early February. We primarily do Titanium or Ti-Carbon bikes. I'd say the stainless is about 5% of our output.
^^ Pick me! Pick me!
One day I'll have a Firefly in Ti. Utter perfection. IMHO.
