Cool - good advice. What seems the be the ideal travel for a fork used with a hard tail for general trail use?

one you can stand over! I have this conversation with many clients, it goes like this: "I want a 140mm travel 29er fork" {they exist} "yes, but you only have a 31" inseam" "what does that have to do with it?" "well, it's a 29" wheel. you add 5.5" for travel, 1+" for the crown, over 1" for the headset, ~ 4.5+" for the headtube - now you are at 40" from the ground, unsprung - how can you stand over that? That's 9" higher then your crotch - it would have to be a 10" frame c-to-c with a straight toptube" "oh - OK, cool - how about an 80/100mm?" there's allot of things to consider, one of which is if the existing equipment will fit your body. If not, it may be telling you something very important. - Garro.

Looks nice! Does the middle horizontal tube serve any specific purpose other than aesthetics? Whether it serves to reduce torsion so you can use a smaller/thinner toptube or downtube? Thanks for sharing.
Yes & No. It makes them quite stiff, but I do thin down the tubes - the "kicker" tube is only 1" x .028" {.71mm} Mostly an homage to the balloners & paperboys of yore that did so much to shape the early MTB bikes. Everyone who owns one {I think I have built ~10 cruisers} really loves them. never seen/heard of one for re-sale. My inspiration for them is a big list of bikes but the Schwinn Phantom & the early Cook's Bros frames really work for me - Garro.

Hi Steve,
It’s crazy to think we may have run into each other 15+ years ago. It’s great to read your history
I had a blast from the past over the weekend. On recent Saturday road rides I’ve spotted Zap & talked to him for a few minutes. He is quite a character but he was always great with support for trail building around here.
I also wish your friend the best in his recovery.
