We live about 5 miles N. of DC in a densely populated community. It is unlikely State of Federal Government would restrict travel or movement due to COVID19. My take is State Gov. may ask orgs. to implement common sense employee policies and advise community organizers to temporarily stop activities where folks gather.

Quarantine large swaths of people does not work.

My sister is living in Paris. The son of her boss came back from China and has been asked to stay in quarantine at home. The funny part is the son is living in his dad's house. and said boss is coming to the office everyday.

Good luck with that kind of quarantines.

I am living in a so far epidemic free area but the Ericsson building next to our office has been closed yesterday because an employee from their office in croatia visited them last week and they found out one of her croatian colleague has been infected. People have been asked to work from home but unless one is found to have the virus they will still visit stores, have social life, their kids will go to school, their wives/relatives will be working...

What concerns me is the lack of national preparedness. We had an NSC head of pandemic response but he and his team were fired in 2018. There were reductions in funding and staffing at the CDC and the Department of Health. A plan to deal with a pandemic isn't put in place overnight. It's something that has been put in place, drills conducted and plans revised. It's not just having a plan but making sure the people in charge have experience and know the drill. If this is too political for you I apologize but it can't be avoided. -Mike G


Incidentally I have a trip to the Dolamites this summer and while the tour company hasn't cancelled they are advising. The Maratona could be impacted

With small children I do worry a lot as well as our proximity to a major research institution and tons of travelers, but I worry about a lot of stuff. Anyway, I have two hopes...

One: spring will stem the tide, just as flu season dies down, giving everyone some room to keep working on tactics, vaccines, etc., and,

Two: we'll get some herd immunity soon. If Covid-19's killing 3% of infected cases, that is really sad, but it's contagious enough that, in the face of its rapid global spread due to a strong economy and tons of global travel going on due to the way we do commerce, perhaps that herd immunity will also spread rapidly. Incidence and mortality will both recede. I'm not a science brain genius so I don't really know how HI develops and don't have time to google it this morning. And, I know Covid's a completely different animal from Zika (which we freaked out about because I went to Honduras right as we were "getting busy" with our firstborn). But it's my hope that Covid-19 will be in two years in the news cycle what Zika is today (but for the reason that Covid is a footnote in infectious disease history, whereas Zika is still mysterious, at least to me, a knownothing worrywart who periodically checks in on CDC and NIH reports for funsies).

Anyway, hug your loved ones, wash hands frequently.

I'm really encouraged by the rapidity of the development of potential vaccines: there appear to be several ready to enter trials ~ two months after the first cases.

You can use science to find potential solutions to a major global threat - who knew?

My plan is to really up my handwashing game, get a few cases of water and non-perishable healthy food in the house, plus carry paper towels to open doors in public. Will seek to minimize my exposure to coronavirus opportunities where we can. We can just do our best.

I just read this article a friend posted and they put the death rate at about 1.4%, but also note that it's really early to get a good solid number on that. I also don't know how reliable a source that article is.

I'm not terribly worried. The common flu seems to be deadlier. I could very well be wrong though. The two hesitations I have are
1 - we have a toddler
2 - my wife is an NP and sees about 100 patients a week. She will encounter it eventually.

A few words from the trenches in Belgium (with typos and awkward auto-translation hiccups intact):

Today was a busy day for me.

Some of y'all already know. I am a pediatric nurse and at the end of of (Intensive Care and Medical Aid) and therefore a student, working in an emergency service in the Charleroi area.

But I am also a nurse in a Brussels-based private company whose mission is to transfer stable patients to the most unstable, requiring the presence of a doctor, nurse on board the vehicle and sometimes equipment allowing them to stay alive...

This company has been entrusted with tasks by the SPF Health and the reference hospital centres in infectious diseases (CHU Saint-Pierre in Brussels and L ' UZA in Antwerp) to carry positive patients to the coronavirus. This company is the only company in Belgium that can equip itself and follow the hygiene protocols for this kind of transport we call MHCE (Highly Contagieuses and Emerging diseases).

Today, I transported a patient infected with the coronavirus in a medical impact type transfer (requiring the intervention of a doctor). This mission lasts more than 5 hours... Yes, 5 h... because we have to count the road from our base to the care hospital, location tracking to ensure that none Contamination of other patients or civilians cannot happen, dressing up in specific combinations, monitored by a crew of hygiene protocols trained in hygiene protocols, care of the patient from his room to the ambulance, the transfer from the first hospital to the from destination until it is taken care of by specialist teams or on-site medical nurse teams. But it's not over, once the care is over, we don't stop there... We need to disinfect the whole vehicle before you can undress with all its precautions taken and eliminate them so as not to contaminate anything ...

Why so many caution? Because we work in a closed environment, without air. In which we are exposed even more to the contagion.

Today, during my care, I saw... I saw a father's lost look, red eyes and face filled with tears. A face scared by the situation and also by the future. I saw a pregnant mother stay strong when she should have been at rest. She was strong for her family and husband... Last time I saw the look of a father like this, I was a nurse at Queen Fabiola Children's University Hospital in the ER during CPR maneuvers of one child...
I also saw when arriving at the hospital of destination, the distress of a father who could not stay with my patient and his wife and once again the fear and anxiety that all of this creates.

Today, I also saw a selfish, self-indulgent and intelligence-free population. People were were on the streets, would be in their arms like nothing was when our country is in a state of lockdown.

BUT SHIT, what don't you understand in the word lockdown? Why don't you stay home? With your families? Who I think should be protected from this plague that is falling on the whole world.

Yesterday I saw idiots, young people like old people rush into bars, evenings, restaurants and all these gathering places to celebrate the "Lockdown" or enjoy this last day before the lockdown... But What a brilliant idea? Like the COVID-19 is going to wait before we start spreading again?

Yesterday I saw people not informed, stupid people once again rush on food... while our country has no shortage of stock and resources! but where is your common sense?

Scientists and politics have made decisions to protect us, to reduce the spread of this virus that is spreading at incredible speed and can kill.. look in China and Italy, the death number!!!

Today I'm pushing my face to this selfish, selfish and self-centered population. While front-line caregivers but also second lines (doctors, nurse, physiotherapist, caregivers and I probably forget) and everything that revolves and revolves around us (secretaries, surface technicians, bio - engineers, lab, educators, teachers, teachers, teachers, firefighters, firefighters, ambulance 112, pharmacists, police officers...) help each other to fight, reduce and relieve our population before it's too late.

Because today, you are the next patients with the coronavirus, the next likely patients I will be taking by ambulance or'd in my emergency department. Thanks to you, we didn't put a club kick to the spread of the COVID-19 but we helped him keep moving forward...

So open your eyes and ears, become aware and do what is asked of you. Stay home and only make the useful trips. Take the proper care and basic hygiene measures that we have been constantly telling you for days and weeks. Do you want information? Don't go to social media, but read the updated scientific data on the right sites (I'll put you the links below).

Stop being selfish and unconscious!
Be in solidarity so that our beautiful Belgium does not endure as much as other countries.
Before we have to make more drastic decisions about the lives of patients and maybe one day of your entourage, family or even your own life.

Personally, I have made the decision to give even more of my time to help my neighbor, help his lives at risk and help you!

TODAY I AM BELGIUM, CARE AND SOLIDARITY!

I would like to say thank you to my fellow doctors, nurses and ambulance workers who I work tirelessly every day. But also to those around us to make our health sectors work. As well as to the solidarity population!!!

Back in Europe, Sweden is still married to herd immunity as the first response: Swedish PM warned over 'Russian roulette-style' Covid-19 strategy. Absolutely bonkers. And, Nick, the article indicates that they seem to be suffering from both types of misunderstandings, the one you described as well as mine.

An ex-army Swedish classmate mentioned that some of his reservist buddies were told over the weekend to get suited up and were handed assault rifles for domestic duties, details of which are yet unknown but are certain to be linked to the health crisis.
