Default I'm a fan of film

I ventured to take a look at the Golden Globe Awards this evening.
It was a pretty brief peek.
If you're not a Hollywood (artist), don't bother watching.
    It's all insider stuff.
    Empty fluff stuff.
I fill like I need a good shower.
    Yuk!

    Mods,
Move this to the Thursday B-session if so inclined.
    Thanks.

My daughter had never seen Being There.

So we watched it last night.

    Great movie, imho.

I am a big Wes Anderson fan, although the French Dispatch was a little meh. His latest, "Asteroid City," might be his best movie. The Roald Dahl short features are brilliant. I love cinematography with the capture of colors and depth. Wes Anderson adds symmetry and composition to enhance the story.

I love big film movies like The Quiet Man, McClintock!, and other John Ford Westerns. By big film, I mean they need a big screen. On my way to and from Wyoming each summer, I go through Monument Valley. I always stop to take it all in. As a historian, I know the old Westerns followed racist stereotypes, but I still love the images.

"My concern is that art, craft, form, style… these things don’t matter to people anymore. I feel like when people say “art film” or “arthouse” they’re using it like a bad word. It feels like Hollywood doesn’t think people care about the deeply meaningful exemplary crafted pieces of cinema anymore. They make those decisions based on audience reactions. So maybe audiences just don’t care what type of films or shows they see anymore as long as they get to binge watch content that’s as easily digested as late night Taco Bell."

I have to watch Asteroid City again. Everyone I was with didn't like it, but I thought it was good. My only complaint is that Anderson didn't make the actor playing an actor who was an actor fold one more time and really push the dimensional aspect. The scalability of performance.

Reminded me in a related way to Charles and Ray Eames' "Powers of Ten" film short (as influenced by the concepts of Kees Boeke I should mention.)

Saw Godzilla Minus One today with the kids. A good movie, and a good monster movie. That Ginza scene—very glad my first time seeing that was on a movie screen, with theater sound.

It must be a massive improvement over their last Godzilla movie 'Shin Godzilla' which I recently watched on NHK BS, and it was a serious disappointment. I was skeptical if I wanted to drop cash and go see this one.

Is it me or 90% of the movies that show in theaters nowadays are either sequels or license reuse of either: Marvel/DC, toys or video games. I mean movies based on books and popular stories have been a thing since the movie industry exists but it seems the original content/story is rarer and rarer every decade.

Nolan did pretty well at the Golden Globes.

Here’s a good discussion of his filmmaking:

Then there’s this. At the opposite end of the scale of Nolan’s large canvas:

A painful watching experience Sunday evening.
A friend recommended, "What's Eating Gilbert Grape".
For myself and my wife it was a very long painful experience.
I had to let out a primal scream when discussing the movie after.
I also wished it was a sunny day right then and there so I could take a soul washing ride.
This beats out "Forest Gump", in the total crap category.

Our friend lent us the dvd.
We haven't played a dvd in years, so paid to stream it.
If we are asked our opinion, I think our dvd ignorance will be our cover story.

    Your opinion may vary.
