Default The fine grind: Whole Coffee Beans

I'm selling my car in order to have myself a decent cup of coffee:
    Stumptown Coffee Roasters - Coffees

Hello Portland, you've lost your ever loving mind over coffee. It's hard to be too critical since we are talking about the heavenly brew however....

In the past we've talked about alder smoked beans and cold brewing process all for the good yo. I'd love to hear about your fav. sources for whole beans.

Frankly, the caffeine buzz apre's vous Spring Training Camp this past April is just starting to lose its edge and I'm in the mood for something good. It might be hard to beat the peaberry Manahole , bless you son, sent from the big island and custom roasted by T.K. OK, it will be VERY impossible to beat that...let's try ;)

My local favorite Redband Coffee does very nice roasts, mostly medium bodied. Fulton Porter, and Uganda Gold are a couple faves. Jessi is a fan of the iced concentrate during the school year and he'll ship that as well.

We now get most of our green beans from CCM Coffee in Florida. Very reasonable prices. June Likes the Yerga Cheffe (Ethiopia) and I like the Mocha Matari (Yemen). The Yemen coffee is a bear to roast since the beans are not sorted and they need much more time in the roaster than any other coffee we roast. VERY unique flavors though. Fun stuff.

Another good source for green beans is:

    Shortly.

Just as soon as the new road bike arrives. [see "I made Twitter" post]

I've messed around on it though with 'cross wheels and my road pedals/gearing.

Do you know if I'm allowed to send coffee through the mail? If so send me your address and I'll send a care package.

I got the same Stumptown email last night. My first reaction was "Holy sh!t Lauren, guess how much they're asking for 12oz of beans!"...I think when they bid to get a Cup of Excellence batch its even more. I've subscribed to thier email enough to get a bit jaded by their pricing.

What I found most intriguing was their new location in Amsterdam. Is is a coffe house or is it a coffee house?

I'm not overly picky about beans, but my main thing is to grind them a level or two finer than most people would for a French press. This allows some of the actual coffee to sneak past the filter and get you that nice jolting last murky sip.

I generally just buy the darkest whole bean Peet's they have at Safeway and grind it in the store.

Zeke's coffee in Baltimore: www.zekescoffee.com. They are just across Herring Run Park from my house. It's available in DC too. Wide variety of beans/roasts and good people.

I called up the local roaster in town (kaldi's) about getting green beans directly from them to roast myself. They were more than happy to sell me some. As a bonus, I got to meet the roasters and talk'em up about coffee roasting. I even found out they have tastings open to the public every Friday, which I haven't made it to yet. I can confirm what Frank said about Redband, mighty fine beans...

We got hooked on Alterra Coffee during our stint in Milwaukee. Now we order it off their website. Organic and Fair Trade for under $10.00 a pound. When you order $50 or more, shipping is free. My favorite is Dark Sumatra. The oils are still on the beans. It's really good. French Pressed to perfection.

Alterra is the best I have ever had, living in Milwaukee it's still a treat.
    Glad you like it.

That handshake logo on the bottom? Thats actually the 'included reach around' logo. So all things included, it's not a bad deal.

there are a few places i get beans.

favorite is a wholesale roaster in my neighborhood i get beans from. i usually tell him just gimme something interesting for espresso. he usually replies with "ok, this is kinda wacky but it's what i've been drinkin lately." and it'll be something like all ethiopian sidamo with just a little gatamalan or brazillian beans thrown in "to take the edge off."
he doesn't do much dark roasting so all the stuff has good acidity.

yesterday i got two pounds from him, espresso blend that was something like five different central and south american origins...i mentioned i'd like something bright for espresso.
then i got mexico fairtrade for the gf and her french press.
he also gave me an extra half pound of harrar beans coz i said i'd been drinking more french press lately and i wanted something different than mexico fairtrade...

all the beans were still warm...

lately getting my green beans from Sweet Maria's and roasting my own. Currently working through a 5 lb. bag of the Espresso Monkey blend. Nothing as fresh as roasting your own beans.

Camp coffee came from Holualoa Kona Coffee Company, 800-334-0348 or Kona Coffee Company at Kona Lea Plantation. I think I spoke with Evelyn. Nice folks. They sell roasted through the stoefront. I had to call to ask about green beans.

The Rocket Blend at Small World Coffee in Princeton, NJ has been my go-to whole bean for 10+ years now. It's a blend consisting primarily Papa New Guinea, and while I can't recall the other included beans at the moment, I know one of them is Ethiopian Yirgacheffe. Rocket Blend is used in-store as their espresso blend, and it's also offered sometimes perked as the COD. I generally brew using a French press, and occasionally in a moka pot.

A more recent pickup (last several years) is the Midwives Moonshine from Rojo's Roastery in Lambertville, NJ. This is probably my favorite physical space of any coffee shop that I've ever been to, and I was fortunate to stop in mid-ride last Saturday in the rain to have an espresso and pick up some whole bean to shove in the jersey pockets. The retail space doubles as their small working warehouse and roasting facility. As you walk in, there's a beautiful service counter on the right, leather couches, tables, and large communal granite high-top in the middle, stocking shelves of green berries floor to ceiling on the left wall, and the roasting machine and a smorgasbord of test grinding and brewing equipment in the back left corner. It's unfortunate they don't have more photos on their website. This place is cool.

Small World does a lot of mail order sales. If you're a regular, sometimes the roaster will throw in an extra something special or give you a break on shipping. I believe Rojos will do mail order as well, but I'm not certain.
