Default I think I'm big time now

I got this message this morning:

"I have a contract to build a solar-assist, fully-faired, tandem tadpole recumbent trike. What would you charge to braze the frame, drawn on Google SketchUp?"

So can I expect my secret framebuilder's club decoder ring in the mail soon??

Shit Eric, I'm going to have to un-friend you so that when you tell him no he doesn't start going down the list.

Oh, I already gave Jake your number. I gave him vector files of your Phantasm logos for all the promotional materials too, should I have held off?

Yeah, I turned it down pretty quick. It came from a local guy, Tulsa's own self appointed guerrilla cycling advocacy leader and perennial mayoral candidate. The guy used to pull a trailer with a 6ft inflatable penis on it. Sadly, it was punctured by police during an altercation that involved his arrest. (Right in front of Oral Roberts University, in fact) It's too bad, I could almost see the marketing potential of having him print "Ride Edoz" on the side of it;)

On the note of taking jobs outside your normal scope of work, I have a request for a custom recumbent. Guy has design that he wants to extrapolate from. I thought it would be an interesting project just for the challenge, but now I wonder.

    Thoughts?

Hehe, it should be easy for you;)

The problem with doing something out of your norm is that you can get more requests for weird stuff once word gets out that you'll build anything for anybody with "the greatest thing since the bicycle" scrawled on a cocktail napkin.

I sometimes bounce oddball stuff that seems like it on't work, be it structural, time based or other. I'm meeting with someone Monday to discuss an oddball, but if it meets those lines Steve wrote above I think it's something the client and i can both get excited about.

What does "custom" mean to you, and what do you want to spend your time building?

Lots of factors. Fairly new to it all. First bike was in March, so it not like I'm a master of the trade by any means. People are showing interest, but its not like I have work pouring in from all angles. Don't think I will make money on it, just because I will put a ton of time into rethinking my fixturing and reformatting my head for his design. However, I certainly don't want to turn down work, or opportunities to better myself. I think my best bet is to put it off to the side for a little bit, and work through my other projects... If I come to a point where I have nothing gainful to build, then I will give it a shot.

Garro - Just moved into your neighborhood and thought I would say hello. Been following your work for a while... always good stuff... learned a lot from it and probably will continue to.

nobody has done this to me for over 30 years, but I think if they do I'll just quote my engineering rate and let them decide. Funny thing is, when it did happen back when I was a teenager I was smart enough to discourage the guy

I have a lot of oddball ideas that I wouldn't mind trying to build. If someone came to me with something that sounded reasonable, I'd probably do it.

If I had any interest, it might be different. If a friend wanted me to help him build something that I thought was cool, I'd consider it a personal project outside the framebuilding 'business' (I use the term business very loosely in my case). I guess I'd only do it if I were willing to give that person and their project my time for free.

Day before yesterday, I got hit up to move canti mounts on a Giant Rincon so the guy could use it as a cross bike. I passed on that one too, even though I like the guy.
