A chance encounter with a pair of kingfishers, this was the best I could do with my mobile phone camera.

I don't think I'll ever see a picture like that again and not think of Aron Ralston.

Something related:
I live almost exactly one mile east of the MO river, but up on the bluffs. Just about every time I go to work or drive out to do some errands I use a road down in the river flood plain that was straitened and widened a few years ago. While doing that work they discovered a bunch of artifacts dating back to the Mississippian Native American people, more commonly known around here as the "Cahokia Mound People," who had for some time (1050–1350 CE) the largest urban settlement in what is now the US.
It's sobering to realize that over 800 years ago people were living almost exactly where I'm driving in my commute, and that they may well have been hunting in the hills by my house. The world doesn't exist for our benefit - we're just passing through, temporary visitors who are part of a long line of humans.
The largest of the Cahokia mounds (not the site by my house):

Blind sphinx moth - that's its name, not its physical condition. Not sure why.

I'm being rude and doing two because last evening was cooler with scattered showers and lots of bugs and frogs out all over.
