Sharp-shinned hawk chased a flicker into a window. I found it where the hawk left it. Too heavy to carry.

Not a technically good photo as it was an iPhone and I see these guys in Fire Island all of the time, but I never see them in Manhattan.

Sharp-shinned hawk chased a flicker into a window. I found it where the hawk left it. Too heavy to carry.

In the late winter/early spring we had a Coopers hawk take down a Flicker only to have a Barred owl attack the Cooper. While the raptors were sorting things out the flicker got away, and when the Cooper flew off the Barred owl flew up to a branch and just sat there as if wondering "Well that seemed like a good idea... How did it go wrong?"

I had a conference in Palm Springs in January and looking back, I am glad AF that I managed to go out 2 days early and see Joshua Tree.
Only real vacation-esque thing I've done this year...
