I would absolutely buy a Porsche as a daily driver. Just make sure that you get it up to good operating temperature every couple weeks. Not to discount this idea, but if the Porsche is a bit much, test drive a VW GTI. A thousand times more fun and engaging than the crossovers you mentioned and practical as well. But a Porsche should be able to handle daily driving tasks with ease. And I’d have no qualms about drivability in winter as long as you get proper tires and wheels. I’d be way more worried about rust.

Funny you should mention the GTI.
My daily driver is a GTI and I have a Porsche 996 C2 as a weekend car.
For me, the GTI is perfect as a daily. It has a great combination of Fun and practicality.

I have used the 996 as a daily for a few stints of a month or so and decided that Yes I can use it as a daily, but No I don’t really want to.
YMMV, but i find the firm ride, cabin noise and thirst for premium fuel make it a less than ideal DD.

If everything goes according to plan I should be back in the bay area sat. Can't wait to get into the GT3.

    Lionel--
You're probably already checking it, but the air in the Bay Area is simply awful from all the wild fires currently burning. If you are coming to do any cycling, I suspect the air is too smoky to allow outdoor exercise.

I stopped at the dry cleaners today and there was a white Porsche Taycan Turbo with white brake calipers parked in front of the shop. It would have been too creepy to take a pic as I didn’t know the owner, but when she came out and caught me looking, I was offered a look inside and around the car...there is really nothing to see under the hood...pretty cool looking car.

A 996 winter car would be pretty awesome. For winter duty you could probably add some sort of aluminum skid plate to the rear to help protect the engine components from constant salt spray and other debris. The engines are very exposed on the underside of those cars. When I was in university in Edmonton there was some rich kid who used a 997 4S year round. I remember seeing it roll past at -25C haha. I did not ever see him slide it around in the snow, which is poor form IMO. Snow is for sideways (at least a few degrees here and there at a minimum). I would bet that even a RWD 911 would be really good in the winter with all the weight over the rear axle. You'd have a really satisfying exit on corners and snapping the rear end out on corner entry with a rev-match free down shift would be great.

These almost look like toys! I thought they were R/C cars when I first looked at the pics.

What's going on with the back end of the red one. Looks like an Opel GT?

Well I sort of like it. You have to look at it like a Porsche powered dakar inspired toy instead of a regular Porsche. It would probably break after only a few hours if it had to be raced but it looks fun to drive on the dirt and to look at. Though I would probably buy a regular offroad racing car if I owned enough land to have fun with that kind of things.

I tend to like Singers, and Richard Tuthill projects. Not sure how I feel about this one yet--it feels like some constraint, even artificially imposed, may have helped the final product from becoming too much of everything. Maybe I just prefer tarmac-oriented Porsches like the earlier Tuthill project.

That there ^^^ is a proper picture. Grape vines, twisty road in Europe, and a 911 GT3 in a stomp-the-throttle powerslide. Life is good. Or will be, when travel opens again.

By the way these Porsche GT3 R-GT are also prepared and raced on unpaved roads.

I would agree with this if it was strictly a show car. But if you overlook some of the styling cues, this thing is the business.
Purposely engineered and built with money and panache to complete the package. I love it.

Driven by Mr. Tuthill himself. The shift indicator is noticeable!
