Apple Venus yesterday, and so far today Drums and Wires and Black Sea. Now Mummer.
So fun to take these deep(ish) dives into much-loved old music.
GO!
Chet Baker for the last week. The older Chet, near the end of his short time here.
The Last Great Concert CD is really something. Chet seems to distill the songs down to their essence.
It does not take so many notes, but it is the way he plays them that is so interesting.
Wistful in a way. Just the music. No showing off of technique.
This CD was recorded only a couple weeks before he fell off the hotel in Amsterdam to his death.
There is another concert CD, from Tokyo, recorded not long before, that is also awesome.
In addition to the essence of the songs, he also can still play the fast exciting stuff that he played when he was young, just with more to it.
And what a great sound he gets ! Something to strive for.
There are lots of really great t r u m p e t players out there, but Chet was someone special.
An inspiration indeed.
Sorry, but the VS site changes "Bloviated Former Presidentet" to "bloviated president" then tacks the et on the end every time i type it So, I put the spaces in to get around the automatic editor.

Chet is fantastic.
Craft Recordings has reissued his 4 Riverside albums on vinyl recently, there was box set a while back,
and now the individual LP's are available separately. Absolutely first rate job, gorgeous tip-on jackets,
and top quality pressings from RTI. They're remastered from the original analog tapes.

I have a few tracks from this on a thumb-drive my sister created for me a few years ago, but finally decided to get the entire CD:

Holy crap, this has been blowing my mind for the past hour:
(Except I’m listening to the studio album on CD).

I am surprised at how much I like this given how much I don't like it as much as I expected to like it
