I'd never heard that term until someone on my Flickr feed mentioned it. It wasn't soft though. Sounded like someone tossing pebbles at the house.

One more and done. She's now incubating. Male is bringing her snacks, though mid-morning she comes out and does her own foraging. Pretty fascinating. Last year, the swallows arrived and nearly ran them out of town, taking 2 out of 3 nest boxes. Now we have 4 boxes, and the bluebirds are already brooding. The swallows stop by and visit a box or two, but they haven't seemed ready to commit yet. Bird real estate is just as confusing as the human one.
