Incredible. Almost feels like there should be a wake when something that large dies a sudden death. Imagine - that is a plant. All that wood and leaves and bark was made with stuff found lying around in your yard and falling and shining from the sky.

Nice to have a dog around. That way someone is always happy.

Until cutting the stump, I had never even thought of the tree as very big. We have giant burr oaks all over our neighborhood that are 120+ years old. Just across the river from us an oak died a number of years ago that was estimated as being pre-Columbian. It's just bonkers to think what some of the old trees have lived through, and the amount of congealed sunshine they represent.

Decided to preempt the frustration of wailing away at a couple of the big crotch pieces, and spent a good part of the afternoon running the saw instead.

We were just having lunch on the porch and heard a big crash. After giving things a chance to settle down, we went over to a ravine that runs along the north edge of our property and there was a pair of big old pine trees lying on top of each other. Just trunks, the upper story having crumbled off years ago. Still a lot of weight subject to gravity. As the big old rotten trunks dry out in this drought, wood turns to powder and a sneeze of a wind tips them over.

Still have it, but it mostly sits in the shed, largely because we aren't really outdoor bonfire people now that we have a wood stove in the living room.

I think the issue with the Solo Stove is that the re-burn technology was originally designed for heating, and it does that really well. My brother has their biggest model out on his patio that's enclosed on three sides (no roof), and on Christmas day I was comfortably standing next to it in a sweater when it was 15 degrees. It throws lots of heat.

What it doesn't do is allow you to see much flame if you're sitting down.

If I were looking for more of an outdoor fireplace, I'd look toward something like what Jotul makes with a viewing area and chimney to manage the smoke: https://www.jotul.com/products/outdoor-fireplaces

Some people love the Solo Stoves, but I've not found the design that compelling.

I’ve had this wood crib in place for about 14 months and I’m going to build another. I used scrap 6” x 8” cutoffs that I had for sunken posts and I essentially made a bridge out of 2” x 6”’s bolted to the posts. Lessons learned for this hobby woodburner…design for as much cover as you can in terms of the sloping roof and it is amazing how fast the wood seasons when you ditch the tarps.

We use one for camping a lot. No smoke is nice. It lights super easy, even if it's breezy, and it keeps the spark blowing at a minimum. If you're sitting next to it your feet get cold, and yeah, you can't see the flame when it's burning low. It's been pretty great for fast fires so the kids can do the smores thing, and it seems to burn out pretty quickly so you can go to bed.

I found out that the Ukrainian company that makes my stainless steel laser cut fixtures for designing and making frames are now making wood burning heaters that can double as cooking stoves. I’ve been begging my friends and family for funds so those I know in Ukraine can have heat. 50 units are being delivered this week. They cost $130 each. I’ll post some pics after some have been set up. The Russians have converted my life from being a frame builder/painter/teacher to humanitarian aid director.

That will keep you warm for a while once it seasons. Our neighbor had four huge black locust trees taken down and was surprised the arborists hauled it away so willingly.
