well the story purported was that the sub's sensors detected a problem , dropped ballast and began an emergency ascent or started to. the fact that someone knew this suggests there was some communication that got through.

A submariner was interviewed on NPR the first or second day this story hit the wire. He was asked what the odds were and replied one percent.

I was surprised to see the obituary this morning of one of the crew. We grew up together. I sent condolences to his sister.

Listening now to Cameron and Ballard now. They said there were certain there was a catastrophic failure on Monday but out of respect kept quiet.

One of my favorite memories of my broadcasting life is meeting Robert Ballard, and talking with him prior to his on-air interview. His exceptional attention to detail came through even in casual conversation.

I was in Submarine Development Group 1, which became Submarine Development Squadron 5 before I left. We had all the Special Project subs and deep submersibles, both manned and unmanned. The guys I stay in touch with mostly comment on how arrogant and ignorant the OceanGate project was. Some are those 50-something white guys that the CEO didn't want to be involved, even though most have been to 20K feet and beyond numerous times. The world of deep submergence has many middle age white guys with vast knowledge and experience to pass on to the next, more inclusive generation.

The intersection of private tragedy and public spectacle is a very unpleasant place.

Read about Charles "Swede" Momsen and the Squalus, then compare to the CEO of Oceangate.
