Default Killed while recording a run on Strava.

Just amazed at the technology and shocked that anyone in a sensitive role would be allowed to use it.

US troops in Afghanistan were doing the same thing until someone noticed and had them stop sharing their locations. A young member of my engineering team was TDY in a dangerous, OCONUS location providing tech support for the US military. Sure enough, he posted a run on Strava. I contacted him immediately and told him to stop sharing. He realized the risk and promptly complied.

It is how Ukraine military has been locating Russian arms depots - both through cell signals and fitness watches.

My Marine son cannot wear a smartwatch in the field. I got him a dumb chronograph with non-reflective glass a few years ago.

UK intelligence comes from Drizly, much more widely used than Strava.

Same thing with is in Balad, Iraq. There were some guys that thought it was cool to openly post their runs on base and taking tagging photos of exactly where they were. You can teach OPSEC all you want, but you can't fix stupid.

I am probably the least technology aware person I know but even I stopped recording my rides from and to my front gate about a decade ago, to reduce the risk of being a target for bike theft.

There’s a setting in Strava to mask a certain radius from your base/house.

Yep, but that radius makes a nice target when everyone seems to disappear into the same area.

Depending on how you come and go that radius is very easy to figure out with a compass. Draw circles with the centers at the route endpoints, you have two candidate points. If one end clearly isn't residential even easier. It's slightly more difficult if the user changes the setting from the default but most people don't.

And I suppose the density of one’s area can make it easier or not.

When I lived in NE Texas, the group rides leave from the house across the street, so all lines led back to there. His garage was broken into a few times.
