Default Filler for slotted stays + stainless dropouts

    Heyo,

I'm dropping in some stainless dropouts into CroMo stays and would love a bit of guidance on which filler to use. I usually keep Gasflux 50% around for bosses. But I'm wondering if I should opt for 45% or even the 38% to fill the inside of the dropout.

I have some nickel-silver rod laying around but every time I use it I feel like I'm brazing with boogers.

The easiest solution is to use "Fillet Pro" silver that can be bought from Wade at Cycle Design. Be sure and get their "Stainless Light" flux at the same time. That flux is designed to have a higher active temperature range (up to 1700º instead of 1600º like normal silver white flux). It is less likely you will burn off Stainless Light flux. This silver is designed to fill the gaps.

56% silver is too runny to fill gaps. It is possible to use plugs instead of Fillet Pro. A round steel rod the same diameter is the ID of your stays can be split in half with the flat sides reduced to the same thickness as your SS dropouts. Then the DOs with the addition of the plugs can be silvered with 56% silver.

    Tom,

I've always used the body fluid decision making formula:

If spit looks like it closes the gap = 56% silver

If green snot looks like it closes the gap =45% silver

If blood comes from the gap = get a band-aid.

    Best of luck,

Doug, I ordered some Fillet Pro.

Rody, this is probably the most effective way to keep a bit of information in my head. Bike is built. Bit of filing to do and we're off to painting.

    Thanks for the info ya'll.
