Kiddo's birthday is coming up, and I thought "I can cook, I can bake hella good bread - I'll make the cake!"
Let me tell ya....just spend the money and let a pro make it LOL. This thing took FOUR HOURS of straight work, and it isn't worth it haha.
White cake, chocolate fudge icing, both from 'Bravetart'. We used food coloring to create 'rainbow' colored layers....didn't use nearly enough tho, the colors are super pale, and I didn't divide it equally so the two cakes (two colors each) were vastly different thicknesses.
Also, I had this idea of using white cake (no coloring) with sprinkles in it around the outside of the cake so it would look white with rainbow sprinkles, then when you cut into it you find the rainbow layers. This was a terrible idea in hindsight. The sprinkles dissolved IMMEDIATELY and just turned the cake grey. And, once you bake it the color is irrelevant anyhow since the sides brown up.
The icing didn't spread at all, it would stick to the spatula and pull off the cake, so I did this spiral piping thing and well...you can see how it turned out.
I will say though, it tastes amazing, the cake and the icing are both crazy delicious - not surprising considering that you're looking at three sticks of butter and like four tablespoons of vanilla extract along with the obvious boatload of sugar. If you were blind you'd think it was a GREAT cake!
We cut into it tomorrow, will report back with how the slices look.
