Does anyone know what type of steel Mike would have been using on a road bike chainstay circa 2011? After 52k miles, I snapped one of the chainstays and am getting the frame repaired.

Maybe reach out to Mike himself? Or Richard Sachs. Unless I’m mistaken, they know each other and Richard may offer some knowledge on tubes used on Mike’s bicycles.

Moved from Zanconato Gallery to the frame builder forum. Photo of the frame helps because some chain stays have an identifiable shape. Your frame repair person should also have expertise here.

I wonder which part of the crack face is dirty and which younger. We assume that this tube didn't crack through in one day...Andy

My local shop thought the problem started there. Can the one on the left be ground back without disturbing anything else?

replacing the right is a piece of cake. and rounding over the port would occur before reinstalling the stay. unless there’s evidence of the left cracking, i’d leave it alone.
