Since college men's lacrosse players probably have an even higher level of idiocy than football and basketball players, it seems like a team building exercise met testosterone fueled idiocy.
Although, I could be wrong.

At BUDS, there are corpsmen trained to spot rhabdo watching the workouts, and it happens. Leading a workout with athletes not conditioned for that level of performance is irresponsible. Lacrosse players are fit, but BUDS is a whole different game. There is a reason why SEAL candidates have such a high drop rate.

Rhabdo hitting in school-type settings fascinates me for some reason. So this story really just blows my mind.
