Camp Stoves: not a review....yet

My camp chef everest lost it's mojo, broken beyond any reasonable fix.

What's my move? Camp Chef has been faithful until it was not, I'm inclined to rinse and repeat.

What I'd like is a stove that can run from 1lb bottles or 5lb and is not larger than the everest.

What are your intended uses, will it stay in a car, hiked into somewhere, stay in your backyard, etc?
I have an original and the newer Coleman stoves, the original now runs propane with an adapter, and love them. I had a ton of military documents that I had to burn, not a cool story, just moving, and I took out the fuel from the old Coleman and used that as is for a few hours, didn't make a mark on it.

Does your travel trailer have a fitting to connect a stove to your trailer's propane? Mine has a connection near the back on the door side.

I realize now you said no bigger than "the" Everest, not no bigger than Everest. Stove model vs. tallest mountain in the world.

The Snow Peak camp stove seems like it has actual burners, not some kind of lightweight metal. Light and go. There's a propane adapter available somewhere.



It does look to share some aspects with the Camp Chef Mountaineer. I haven't seen on of those in person though.

Weber Q1000. Bonus points because it fits in the rear storage of an Airstream.

I could spend two paychecks on Snowpeak stuff. My fire pit slash grill is an amazing piece of equipment.

Use case is it must fit in one of the Airstream storage compartments. Something the size of the Camp Chef Mountaineer would be as large as I'd want to go.

Bill, yes the trailer has a low pressure propane connection.

Mountaineer keeps popping up with interest.

Dan, that Q grill is great but I need a burner for when I'm using a fry pan or dutch oven.

Probably buy a Camp Chef.

I have one of the newer, top end Colemans, and I don't like it at all. The temp settings seem to go from too hot to thermal nuclear. Seems designed to be a water boiler, not a bacon fryer.

However, I spent last week using a new Eureka of all things. It was ... good. Much better than I expected. Good temp control, solid build quality. Bright blue cover.

Bad new for the children I do not have. Bought the Steel Partner 2 burner and it is all that and a bag of chips. It is built like a tank, gas modulation is terrific. I've got zero complaints other than the eye water price. Lodge does make a griddle which fits this stove perfectly. The Steel Partner will run off of 1 lb bottles or any Propane cylinder.

If you must to have a stove that is made right and will not break, this could be it.

I bought a cheap, match-light (no igniter) Coleman from Walmart a couple years ago after trying a couple of groovy, more expensive units that blathered on about having a good simmer; they didn't have a simmer at all, only medium. This bottom of the line Coleman turned out to have a nice low simmer, lots of power when you want it and the stove works great. In summer (which has arrived) when it's hotter'n hell down here I do most of my cooking with it out on the porch. I added the adapter and hose for connection to a 20# cylinder. Couldn't be happier with it.

I hear you Jay. For many years I kept, maintained and cherished my ancient coleman white gas stoves. Man they were good and useful.

Stay with the Everest and just get the 2X version...however the Everest is not as fuel efficient as the Camp Chef Mountaineer which uses about half the fuel that the Everest will and boils water faster...but the Mountaineer costs almost twice as much. If you only go camping 3 to 5 times a year, you won't save enough fuel over 20 years to pay for the difference, but if you camp a lot then I would get the Mountaineer.

Folloup - I've been using the Steel Partner this summer. Got to say it is very good and rugged as heck. There is nothing to hate about the stove, easy to setup, clean and cook with. I found a Lodge griddle which fits the two burner surface perfectly leaving room for heat to escape. Go spend your kids college funds and do not look back.
