    Default Weekend morning mountain films

Mikaela just won her 98th World Cup race. Mt Bachelor is open this weekend. It’s my favorite time of year, and part of that is weekend mornings with coffee and a mountain film. Or two.

That's my Dad in the Caretaker video! Narrating his old slides, beginning about 2 minutes in. He's the guy chopping wood at about 2:40, and that's his '48 Cadillac hearse at about 2:20 (although the guy in that picture is someone else). He was the President of the Harvard Mountaineering Club in the early '60s and the cabin was his big project. He's still on the board of the nonprofit that's involved with it, and I've spent a lot of time up there with him, some of it work parties in the summer, some of it recreational.

Back in 2016, we went up there in March and he climbed South Gully in Huntington Ravine, right around his 75th birthday.

They built the cabin in the summer of '62; in the summer of '63, a crew including my uncle Pete, but not my Dad, made the first ascent of the Wickersham Wall on Mt. McKinley. No one ever repeated the route, and now the glaciers have receded in a way that makes a future ascent very unlikely. Here's some bonus HMC content - my uncle Pete climbing up on the VW bus they drove up there in, to get a look at the mountain.

December first. Mikaela crashed but she’s OK, Jessie’s racing again, and I just might get on skis this week.

Can’t resist a weekday evening mountain film. I’ll do pushups.

I got out backcountry skiing last weekend. Far crappier than anything in any movie but quite good in spots and so nice to be out after such a poor season last year.

Saw the cannons still going this morning at the local slip and slide (Catamount.) In the teens at night but sunny at least half the day.

In Oregon for a few days, hoping to get on snow once I’ve finished all of my meetings.

    Butternut opens Friday.

Catamount opens Saturday, but I expect they will only open for the two days of the weekend, then shut down next week to make more snow to be ready for the following weekend, which I believe is their usual opening day (around mid-December).

Belleayre, Gore, and Whiteface are all open seven days a week now, started doing so the day after Thanksgiving.

I won’t get on skis this trip. Meetings moved so I’m now on a call mid-day. It’s also a bit of a heat wave today—in the 20s most of the week but today it’ll get near 50 on the slopes. Good day for a hike!

I rewatch Kungsleden at least once a year because Emelie is so darn happy out there in the mountains.

Part of me likes the idea of going to a defunct resort and hiking for turns. Part of me thinks it would be a little spooky.

If you also could use some positive energy today—perhaps it’s raining on your local ski area, or it’s just a Sunday at the end of the year—this is for you. The late JP Auclair in Nelson, BC is one of my all-time favorite ski clips.
