That's a Superb Fairy-Wren, which is both its common name and its description. A bird a lot of birdwatchers know even if they don't know much about Australian birds.

I took this yesterday at Chaco Culture National Historical Park. We were staying in Farmington, NM and visited Aztec Ruins and Hovenweep on the way.

A mea culpa for posting two images, but perhaps excusable, as upon closer inspection, the place has a significant tie-in to cycling.

Taken at what I think is the neatest park in Madison. I wonder if skating is allowed here (incl. under the footpath bridge).

Not sure this belongs here but anyway... I finished a second MA in November, this time in Military History. My wife is an artist (and soap maker) and created this matte using ledger pages from a hardware store in 1896. My thesis was concerning the Proclamation of 1863 in western PA. A guide, on top is a Wampum belt and the lower right has a turtle, both representing the Iroquois Confederacy, on the left is a "Black Boy," a colonial rebel group led by James Smith. They painted their faces in the style of an Indian warrior to hide their identity. On the right is a Highlander of the British Army also known as the Black Watch. The lower left is an image of colonists crossing into the frontier (prohibited by the Proclamation). Immediately below the diploma are USMC images from Tarawa and Guadalcanal from my amphibious warfare class and representing my son's Marine service.

That's actually an aloe species. Not sure which. Yellow bloom probably helps on i.d. Red color is usually due to low water content of the plant, so that's just a dry aloe.

Yep, brain fart on my end. And yes the red is a result excessive sun exposure(dry soil/plant). Some people(myself included) prefer the red and withhold water to a large extent during summer months, given water some green will reappear in the aloe, during rainy winters in my climate zone they are mostly green.

    from net:
Aloe plants turn red most commonly due to excessive sun exposure, which causes the plant to produce more anthocyanin (a pigment responsible for red color) as a stress response to intense sunlight, especially when combined with inadequate watering; essentially, it's a natural defense mechanism against harsh conditions

I have Meyers and Italian lemon trees(one each), the Meyers constantly produces perfect civilized little gems, the Italian not so much, this is one of the misbehaving Italians, size of a softball +-.

(44,000# of garbage truck + 23,000# of trash + a building with 60 occupants) = 4 crazy days of building assessment, emergency structural repairs, truck extraction and cleanup. Chapeau to the working man and woman, as the laborers, carpenters, riggers and engineers who pulled together as a team, working 16 hours a day in frigid temperatures to salvage what started as a catastrophic event on early Tuesday morning. If the snow could go on hold for a while, I could ride outside and clear my head and put this event in the drawer. PS…no physical injuries but a few people who were in the work area at the time, and the driver of course, are seeking counseling as you can imagine. The truck penetrated 25’ into the building and was sitting over the basement, which really amplified the severity of the situation.

Took this today in Gebo, Wyoming, an abandoned mining town north of Thermopolis.

Is it good luck to see a red tailed hawk while on a ride? I think it is.

The roads have been too snow/salt covered to ride Dan, and it’s been extremely cold outside, so my cardio these past few weeks has consisted of indoor riding, hiking and snowblowing. I spotted this red tail on the trail this afternoon when I looked up after seeing a shadow in flight…it just sat on the limb and I admired it for a good 10 minutes. Fitting that it was as I just hit the trail at Beechwood Farms (Western PA Audubon Society Nature Reserve), which is a short walk down the road from me. I guess that it can read too.
