Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy. The good folks at Cane Creek USA have appointed me, Little Richie from the old neighborhood, as the worldwide distributor for their 1” Classic 110 Threadless Headsets. Similarly, Jeff at Wilde Bikes is now the go-to person for the threaded versions. This, in many ways, is like getting a Royal Warrant from the Queen (or perhaps from the King.) Speaking for all involved, I’m proud to be part of a continuing tradition of offering high quality and elegant components for framebuilders and connoisseurs. See our respective websites for details. And remember, headsets over billboards.

In the spirit of the season, I’ll think of you as the first one inch threadless toy maker to the King.

    Man, I love ^^^that red-on-white color combination!
I may need to order a second Sachs just so I can have one that color. :)

these tools have come home thirty years after i designed the parts they were made to produce. it was some time after 1990 when grant asked me to invent a set of lugs for a frame bridgestone usa wanted to manufacture. from blanks, and with no napkin sketches, i made the samples. he sent them to japan, and several months later, i was reading a series of faxes that explained why my designs were too intricate to replicate. the three pieces came back and sat in my studio window as part of a display.

fast forward a year or two. bridgestone usa shutters and grant starts rivendell. he calls me back to ask about those lugs i carved; he wanted them for his new brand. did i still have them? certainly! could he use them for the rivs? of course. i boxed up the original versions and sent them to walnut creek. this time, grant asked long shen to cast them. these images show the tooling needed for that task. one of the pictures has the remaining original lower head lug i carved. many of the other images show the cast version.

i was proud to be asked both times to be part of something outside of my framebuilding bubble. thousands of bicycles were made with these three lugs, though few who ride them know their origins. but enough do know. and some time after the riv thing became a household name, my parts were sold off only to land in the laps of others who profited from the sale of my lovely creations. when i was still involved, i did the work for free. for the honor of being part of the project. with these tools now in my hands, everything has come full circle.

sixteen more images in this album.
