belt sanders atmo -

i need to retool and can't find the equal to what i tossed when we left
episcoville. i had a dayton (granger) table top belt sander that used
1" X 42" belts, had 3 pulleys (rather than 2 contact points), and a
1/3hp motor iirc. all the units i see now have extra side disc grinders
or sanders on the left side, or have the belts roll over just 2 pulleys.
i shouldn't have dumpstered so many tools.

i would never regret spending the money to buy a wilton square wheel - i've used them in the past - but i just use a crappy chinese sander now

yeah - they all seem to have the extra sander disc on one side or the other.
i never used those and my old unit was the belt part only. i may have to cave
and get one of the newer rigs atmo.

I have a Delta that runs a 1" x 42" belt and an 8" disc and the thing is bomber, heavy and pretty darn quiet.

I've been using daily for the past 7 years and it's yet to give me a single issue.

Highly recommended.

I have a Wilton square wheel & love it but it's more than you need. A really handy tool is the Kalamazoo bench grinder/sander combos. I put a 3M finish wheel on the other side.

Seems infinitely configurable. Does not fit your belt requirements....but it is still neat and made right here in Columbus, Ohio.

After watching the demo videos again.....I can not imagine a more flexible belt sander/grinder. If it were not so expensive I would have one.

I've owned two Kalamazoos that have served daily for over 15 years with nothing more than belt replacements and the occasional blow from the compressor...not a three spindle but precise and made to last. Enco has one priced at 199 and is currently running a 10% off deal right now through Friday...would compensate for the shipping.

The Beaumont design is not complex...you could easily replicate the design for a fraction of the cost and some concentrated time. Used 2hp Baldors can be found daily for less than 150 bucks with a little effort. Just sayin.

I own one of the KMG-1 grinders. I believe I was the first framebuilder to get one when he opened up shop and it is one of my favorite tools.

It is simple in theory. I do not think you could make it, if you considered your time valuable at all for what you can just buy it for. Rob even made me some special parts for it back then for free. He is a hell of a guy and will sell you only what you want or need and it is a lifetime tool.

I did source motors and such off of eBay. You can also run 1'' belts on the slack grinding attachment if you like. They work just as well. 2'' belts are standard for knife makers which is what the unit is predominately made for.

Richie, I think you would find a lot of reasons to use it. I have used those little 1'' things but I am spoiled by the KMG.

I agree...when balancing time vs. monetary value for a career builder, purchasing is a no brainer, pay for it.

However, for a hobby builder who would benefit from the design and machine time, the project is not that complex and would offer a bredth of valuable experience.

Kinda along the same lines as my belief that every builder desiring to do this as a profession should build their first fixtures...you learn more through the process than the value of the end result.

Anyhoo, let us know which direction you finally decide to go e-Ritchie.

That KMG is sweet! Dave, I recall you touting the KMG in the past, but I just watched the video for the first time and man is that impressive. $750 sounds like a bargain for such a versatile tool.
