any words of wisdom about spoke holders?

It turns out there is at least a minority of randonneurs that think spoke holders are required frame braze-ons.
It seems like spokes will adjust to a great degree, but I'm trying to figure out if there is a reasonable distance between holders that will accommodate as many wheel designs as possible.

Whatever you do it will be wrong . Use any spoke and put the proper spares with a cork in the seatpost

after I posted this, i went out to the bike stash and compared spoke lengths. I think you're right about this, there is a difference of up to a couple of centimeters between the lengths of the spokes that I might use on my long distance bikes. I was thinking about getting one of the fiber spokes.

Just mount a Phil spoke cutter to the rack. Problem solved.

I always recommend my customers to carry spare spokes of the same gauge as those already in the wheel (make a few with a z-bend to insert from the wrong end) That way you can replace the spoke, tune it up until it sounds the same as the others on that side, and be off to a bikeshop without knowing anything about truing a wheel
