Request: Anyone have a simple way to hold a lugless seat post binder boss? I've tried a few things and am happy with none of them. Would love to know if anyone has nailed it. I use the round, pre-mitered Design Engineering bosses that HJ sells.

I don't know if I'd say I've "nailed it," but I use the simplest of simple tools for this job. I use a bent spoke and masking tape. Make a tight U at the top of the spoke and place it over top of the ST. Now push the boss up to the place you want it and tape the other end to the centerline of the ST. the I use spokes for all kinds of holders in general. You can also do it on your alignment table with a heavy 90-degree block pushing the boss into place from the back and a machinists square to make sure you're right up.

Thanks Tony. It was a breeze to make. Wish I'd made it years ago! I've only used it for one rack so far and most of my rando bikes have the same head tube angle, so it will cover most. When I need a different angle I can easily make another. I thought of making an adjustable pivot, but it seemed to be too much work to cover two or three angles.

I've done it that way on the alignment table, but it seems like a lot of hassle and it is hard to braze in that position. I'm going to keep working on this one. I'm sure the spoke thing works, but I want a 5 second setup that works perfectly every time.

Canti boss jig.

Two pieces of square tube with boss sized holes drilled squarely in them and a piece of solid square stock that slip fits into the square tube. Slip them in and out to get your width adjustment and you are good to go.

Two modest contributions:
First, a chainstay dimpler made from an old mill table T-nut, filled with a piece of threaded rod, and then shaped on the grinder:

I made this tool back in the 90's at match. We used it to put on the rear split stops on probably every Paramount we made. I continue to use it. Adapts to most bikes and puts the stop a nice distance away from the rear der without measuring.

when you've made tools for everything else....a rear-dérailleur hanger positioning tool...it takes the guesswork out of hooded dropouts when you have to set their position yourself. Made to the 6-10 mm Shimano spec.

the one is more of a work station then a tool - a can sit & rotate whatever workpiece i have. the second is just a piece of wood that happens to be just perfect to back up a stay for flattening. more later as i use them - Garro.

It's not really repeatable, but it works really good. I get it square by butting it up against a pipe head that I set on the tube.

and 3rd is my doohickey to make sure they are not crooked when I braze them.

I consider these trade for Dave Kirk's neat arm that holds the chainstay in phase when he dimples them. I'm gonna plug that itno my setup this weekend. Thanks, Dave:)
