I'm looking for a couple of feet (one foot would work) of 1/4"-3/8" x 4" would be perfect. I just haven't been able to find anything like that very easily or without it costing $400.

For quick and small quantities because I forgot to plan ahead I go to onlinemetals.com
I've used online metals with success. I recently used Wicks or Shapiro Supply because they are much closer to me. Wicks has a couple of odd smaller sizes of tubing that I like.

Can I ask what it's for?
I was looking for something similar for some drop outs, and in NZ it was quite hard to come by.
I suspect that's it's not difficult to source in the USA though, and in the end it was easier and cheaper just to get the local laser cutter to source the material and do the job for me.
Not quite the same thing as home made perhaps, but the only solution for me at that point in time.
Eric, thanks, those guys had exactly what I needed for $100 shipped. Perfect.
Wicks has a 9"x18" piece for $66.
Getting stuff at Online Metals is like grocery shopping at a convenience store...sure they may have what you want, but you're gonna pay baby!
I get 1" x 1/8" x 6' sticks of 4130 strap for pretty cheap from A. Spruce - Garro.

I got an 18" x 18" x 1/4" shipped for $100 so I'm pretty stoked about that. It should last me a while. Thanks guys, those two sites are great metal suppliers it looks like.
