Re: harry potter ---- never the final episode ....
For my 8 year old Harry Potter was the gateway drug for Tolkien. Now that we have read both series back to back it is a bit of a toss-up on who I like more. (this from a 40 year old dad who grew up reading Tolkien and was skeptical of Rowling)...
There's a lot of crap out there that kids read these days. Harry Potter shines compared to most of it. If your going to make a bike analogy then Harry Potter is more like a fine mass produced Japanese Panasonic, Bridgestone, or Miyata. Not the master work of Sachs, Pegoretti, or others, but a tool you can still win races with... I'll take it...

Keep in mind, these were her first books. They may not be great literature to some, but treat her like a framebuilder building his first frames. Each one gets better, and those who watch get to see the growth of an artist. Also, just like with bikes, it's better that kids read HP than nothing. Think of that Miyata as a gateway to a Pegoretti.
