Would it be inappropriate to ask how you achieve that multi-layer candy paintjob? Stunning work!

Inappropriate? Nope. I'm here to share :)

At it's most basic explanation, after your sanded primer layers are down, a dark base coat is applied. The base can be a flat (as in the road bike) or a metallic (as in the 29er) dependent on the final look you desire. A lighter metallic color is applied next, by either mechanical application or airbrush dependent on the final visual look you are going for. Transparent candies are then sprayed over the lighter metallics for the final color of that layer. Repeat as necessary for multiple hues or depth to be achieved. Cover copiously with clear.

Wah lah, and with a final snap of the buffing cloth, you are done...that easy ;)

That snake skin bike certainly gets around, thanks for the kind words.

Originally, I built it to be an occasional travel bike for Mike, but within a month of receiving it, it became his primary ride. He's beat the shnizzel out of it the last 4 years, riding in WA, AZ, CO, NC, NY, NH and Scotland. Now that he's been chasing endurance events, it's sure to see more travel time. The only upgrade he's made has been to swap out the steel bar and Thomson post for Ti ones. So glad he's been enjoying it.

A big thanks goes out to all the fine folks who came out and supported our races and festival this past weekend in the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area at Camp Manatoc.

We had a total of 660 racers over the two days partaking in the trail run, cross series, kids races and the mountain bike races. Another 700 riders were registered for the open riding to take advantage of the trails that are open to riding only this weekend each year.

As is our mantra, 100% of the proceeds go directly back into our cycling community...thanks so much for enabling us to continue to grow our sport.

Thanks guys...now in my 21st year serving at the fire department, 17th year as a frame builder/fabricator. I'm ready to drop down to just one full time job soon :)

Although Sunday was a day of remembrance, it was also another day of work in the shop as I've got lots of customer's waiting for me, steel this time...

I've had a number of folks ask what equipment I use when welding Ti. As I dropped my torch and broke my cup yesterday, I took advantage of the time to document how I fab up my Ti welding cups.

What setup do you use for steel?

Bill,

Steel is a much more straight forward material to work with, as it in nowhere as temperamental as titanium can be.

For the majority of my high end steel work, I will typically utilize a internal purge to protect any contaminants from being pulled into the weldment on thin tubing. My torch is set up with a number 7 ceramic cup, gas lens, running a 3/32" electrode.
