This isn't the first time I've read this. Hope they make it right and more sturdy for you.

I'd like a set of boots made by Russell.

For something short and light, I'd get these.

For heavier use I'd get a set of these.

Made to measure boots sound awesome, especially made to measure in Wisconsin.

Pretty sure that size is called the Bambi. They can often cost more than the big ones, as there is a growing subculture emerging of folks who are stripping out the innards and doing high end mod remodels on them. A bambi is light enough to be towed by a normal passenger car.

Me too. In the spirit of needing brown and blue options I added a pair of each of these to my closest this fall.

I want to take good pictures without lugging a DSLR around, and the new Nikon 1 looks like the ticket.

    Absent that, I'll settle for a Lecia D-Lux 5.

Buy a Panasonic LX-5 and save a couple hundred dollars.

    +1 on the above.

Don't buy the Nikon 1. The sensor is tiny, and the price tag and lenses are huge.

    Instead, buy one of these:

Compacts - Panasonic LX5, Canon S95/100, or the Olympus XZ-1. As lined above, the D-Lux 5 is a rebadged LX5 that's made for people that will pay $200 extra to have the red dot on the front.

Mid-size - Any m4/3rds camera, really - all of the Olympus cameras have the same sensor, despite what they tried to say about the "3" series. So, EP-1,2,3; EPL-1,2,3, and EPM-1 (the tiny one). Panasonic makes a pile of them too, but I haven't owned any of them or handled them extensively. In addition to the 4/3rds stuff, Sony's NEX stuff is pretty sweet, though the lenses can be big. The NEX-5N is pretty nice, and the NEX 7 will be sweet whenever it's introduced (delayed due to Thai floods).

And finally in the smaller than DSLR category, the Fuji X100. I have it and love it, but it's a very specific camera. I think its quirks would really piss most people off. But perfect for Leica reenacting.

    Cody,
How do you like the Olympus? By chance can you compare it to a G10?

I have a G10 now and a tiny POS compact Canon, and am going back and forth between getting an S95 to have on hand at all times, or unloading the G10 and trying out a micro 4/3.

Have the Canon S95 and love it. A bit of an impulse purchase at the Sioux Falls, SD Best Buy.

Canon G10 or Panasonic G10? I'm assuming the Canon, since they Panny is a m4/3rds camera. I haven't shot anything in anger with the G (only in camera shops), so I can't really give you any real-world experience. The m4/3rds sensor is a much larger sensor than the G10, which should help. I don't think it would be _that_ much bigger to carry around (depending on lens choice) than the G10. I'd expect it to perform better at high ISOs, and you can get faster glass for m4/3rds, at a relatively decent price. Nothing is going to be as easy to carry around as the S95/S100, but at ~400 grams, it's much easier to haul a around a m4/3rds camera than a DSLR. I always have a bag with me, so carrying a camera isn't a problem. Hauling the D90 around can get old.

But comparing it to my Nikon D90 and the X100, I think it is a really good system. It gives up ground at high ISOs to both (the X100 is the best of the three). High ISO usability is a big thing for me, since I spend quite a bit of time walking around at night shooting. The m4/3rds focuses slower than the Nikon, but sooooo much faster than the X100. The new EP3 claims to have the fastest autofocus ever. I agree with the claim wholeheartedly, having played with one briefly. The in-camera stabilization of the Olys is very very awesome. I've got some good handheld shots at speeds I never thought possible. People seem to really like the Oly JPEG colors, though I always just shoot in RAW. And the lenses are interchangeable, unlike the X100.

The EP3 with kit lens is around $900, but the real steal is the refurbished EPL1 at $299 from Adorama. This is what I have, and honestly, I don't think you can get more camera for $300. It's a bummer you don't live in DC anymore, otherwise I'd let you carry it around for a week and see how you like it. You can checkout my photostream at Flickr for some shots with it. I think most or all of the pictures are tagged "Epl-1." All of the Japan stuff and about half the Singapore stuff is from the EPL-1. All the shots are RAW and have gone through Aperture 3. Most have the "auto enhance" preset applied.

Having said all that, what you can do with the S90/95/100 is crazy for a camera of that size.

    Hope this helps.
