Default OT: long form journalism- share your favorites

In the last couple months, I’ve found and bookmarked a few sites that link to various recommended long articles, of the type written by the Gladwell/Michael Lewis/Foster Wallaces of the world.

Great for airport reading, passing time in hotels, etc.

Here’s a few websites to get you going. Feel free to point out links to any stories you find interesting.

Read this first when it was reprinted in 05 or 06. I don't care for baseball. Found myself wishing it were a book.

Jonathan Lethem in Harper's, Ben Marcus in same.

The ecstasy of influence: A plagiarism, By Jonathan Lethem (Harper's Magazine)

More lit crit, but both fantastic writers. Marcus really has an axe to grind vis a vis Jonathan Franzen.

Assuming that you're not shooting for pointy-headed intellectual stuff, then The New Yorker and Harper's fit the bill for me.

I would also recommend the editor's picks from Instapaper.

I mostly read the New Yorker (just for the Sempe cycling cartoons) and Harpers, but I enjoyed this piece on the salvage of the Cougar Ace from Wired:

I'm biased (Full Disclosure: I work for the Atlantic on the advertising side), but I'm always impressed by the quality of our features. If you have an appetite for long-form, I think you'll agree - although I admit that the web isn't the best way to consume these kinds of editorial (print or iPad are preferable, I think)

There's an article in the current National Geographic about the Rwanda/Uganda/DRC area that has some of the best political reporting sub-Saharan on Africa for a general audience that I've read in a long time.

I'm reading the New Yorker anthology of sports writing. A.J. Liebling's piece on the Rocky Marciano/Archie Moore fight is great, and I don't like boxing.

Last week I was on the train from DC to Baltimore clicking through the news on my phone and generally not being excited about the state of the world.

And then, out of the blue, this Louis Menand essay on poetry showed up in my inbox and made my ride. It's just a lovely piece of writing.

Ingest or inbibe your favorite hallucinogens, grab some small arms or explosives, and then sit down and read any Hunter Thompson until it starts to sound rational. To come down gently, move on to Edward Abbey.

Nat'l Geo made an editorial change about 4-5 years ago (probably longer - my memory shortens time more and more lately,) where they decided that some issues were too important to gloss over any longer. They've become a much better magazine as a result.

I've been working my way through this: The New Kings of Nonfiction: Michael Lewis, Jack Hitt, James McManus, Lawrence Weschler, Michael Pollan, Bill Buford, Chuck Klosterman, David Foster Wallace, Dan Savage, Ira Glass: 978159448267: Amazon.com: Books

It was put together by Ira Glass, so if you like This American Life, you'll probably enjoy this. Some of the pieces are a bit old at this point, but interesting nevertheless.
