as a golfer- i often wondered:
why do we need COMPLETE silence to hit a ball that is static
yet
in baseball it is encouraged to go wild with 40k+ fans screaming for a guy to hit a ball that is coming at him at 90mph?
everything is a game
but can your 3y/o do a TT up Alped'Huez?
stay thirsty
"make the break"
Admittedly, soccer bores the hell out of me. But the number of fake fans who come out of the woodwork once every four years to become raging, nationalist assholes really sends it over the top for me.
On the other hand, I really do go nuts for the tour. Its not my favorite race, but its my favorite race. The deck is stacked. The drama is there. The pressure is on. Every year.

World Cup fans et al. I guarantee this is the most fun you'll ever have peeing in a urinal:

I think the 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 in the olympics. No luck involved, just "did you put in the time to get fast enough to win." There is no chance of a flat, a bad call by the ref, or the newest aero designs making you faster than your competitors. Get out there and run on a track faster than the other guys.
years ago... my daughter played soccer.
the world cup final was between italy and brazil.
we went into the italian section of boston ( north end ) to watch the scene..
a complete carnival.. tvs set up everywhere in the streets.. fabulous...
game ends ina tie ( as usual )..
the shootout...
place is rocking unbelieveable...
the last italian was the great baggio...
he missed the goal by 10'.
the north end became completely quiet. not a sound.
over the river in cambridge... is east cambridge- the brazilian section..
went wild... the yelling and cheering blasted right through the n end.
it was fantastic.
we became wc fans that day... impossible to beat that.
no tv hype.. just a game with a winner and a loser.
as a reformed striker of the dimpled bastard, i say it's because the former is more difficult. the golf ball is supposed to go to a particular place. the bb only has to go as far away as possible-yes inside of bounds, but the golf shot can go (too) long. also, methinks our brains are better wired to hit a moving target than a static one-with a long flexible stick.
but i am with those who say "sport" doesn't really apply where physical fitness isn't the primary factor.
F1 is great, but it's motor racing, not a sport (dominated by physical exertion).
bears repeating:
AFC Championships
super bowl sunday is a good day to ride a bike around in the city.
all the idiots are drinking or getting ready to drink. little traffic.
Football ain't bad. But the Super Bowl is mostly not football. Just kinda the worst.

50m and 100m freestyle in the Olympics. As an ex sprint swimmer I am obviously biased, but these are among the most amazing sporting events in the world by any measure.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of the body suits either. That stuff came out after I left the scene, but I don't like the way they look nor what they've introduced to the sport. Time standards from my day are no longer a direct comparison with today's body suit times. I'm sure it's even more dramatic in the distance events.
The World Cup for me is the greatest sporting event. The Euro tournament (starts tomorrow), is not too shabby either.
