It's been a very busy week...with work,training, and racing.
RAAM comes thru next week, so as an official time station...there is much prep work around the shop. ;)
being open 24 hours a day next week will take its toll.

...until next time.

Well....after getting up this morning at 3:15 to head into the shop for my RAAM mechanincal duties,
and a bit of rest time this afternoon, I managed to get some garage time finally.
(With moments to spare between eating dinner and girls' softball games tonight.)

I poked an M5 .80 hole in the plate, for a skewer to thread into.
Then added threads to the skewer on both ends (after taking the head off).
Then I notched CENTER on the wheelstand gauge that I picked up.

This is set up with a 'donor' dropout for now, just to get my spacing on the inside.
Fine tuning will come later with the REAL RS dropouts.
I built a little TIT to go on the end of the gauge, this gives me a real tire location.
I was midway in the attachment phase, and had to wrapppppp it up for the night.

I stared at this until I thought it moved.

More ideas came to me in the night...
Improvements to the dropout alignment 'dooma-hicky'.

$5.67 worth of hardware...counting the second trip...after breaking off the bolt while threading the soft-hot bitch. Grrr.

A chrome acorn nut and a knob create a perfect micro adjust on the alignment tool.

Also a new tongue added to the end, to replicate the actual tire location.

"Oh, Andy loved geology. I guess it appealed to his meticulous nature. An ice age here, million years of mountain building there. Geology is the study of pressure and time. That's all it takes really, pressure, and time. That, and a big god-damned poster."----

I dig the combo...so drink it, smoke it, or eat it...and then tune in to this short film.

Gadget of the night...
An idea that I've had laying around in my head for a braze-on derailleur holder finally came to the bench.
Ingredients:
One broken Tiagra or Sora front derailleur (these work good because they screw apart at the pivot points)
One broken X-5 rear derailleur (thank you Mr. Rock or Mr. Tree for the damaged long cage)

With a bit of sawing, filing, and drilling...I was able to make a pivoting Frankenstein'd helping hand
that can be tightened with a 5mm to pull the braze-on mount tight to the tube.

<Whispers> Tubes are on the way...

OK....
Tubes are in hand. Thanks to RS on the quick quick quick shipping and also the RS ATMO goodies !!

A few questions...
I measured the tubes...mic'd the end thicknesses (if that is a word) and tried to make heads or tales of which way to place the tubes.
Ends are marked RED...I have came to the assumtion that it denotes UP or FRONT depending on tube placement.
QUESTIONS for today:
Do I want to cut the needed section from the 'middle' of the tube, i.e. cutting equal amounts off each end to place the tube in the middle of the butts???
I would think (yikes) that the bulk of the ST would want to be left up top...and not remove any from the heavy end...only trim as needed for strength???
I've seen HT left long above and below the lugs....I guess this leaves a shoulder to braze against on the flat side (top and bottom of the HT)
This is cut off later and filed/reamed for the headset???
Mark the tube centers with a straight edge...for alignment in the lugs...plus accesory items???
Any other precautions...things to keep me from screaming OOOOH SHIT??
The proof is now going to be in the pudding. Zero hour. Prep and bullshit...and quant pictures of everything this side of my dog farting...
all gets REAL. Work ahead. The foundation is poured..the walls are going up.
It's steel...this won't hurt.
;)
