my line of work routinely requires me to wear steel toe boots. it's really a formality in most cases, but the rules are the rules. i just ordered a set of red wings beckmans on someones suggestion in another thread. anyone need to wear steel toed footwear and have any good suggestions??

I used R.Wing steel toe for two yrs. as a job requirement. The only issues I had were keeping my toes warm when standing in very cold conditions. Almost nothing helps. Also, eventually the leather on the toe cap will get destroyed. Something to do with how little give there is over the toe? Thin socks are a no no, the steel cap will cut into your toes.

I have HOT feet, so wearing any kind of boot when it's not cold out is fairly uncomfortable. These look sorta normal with jeans, but have the steel toe for wrenchin' on cars back in the shop for those time I drop a subframe or damper on my foot.

The hot ticket for steel toed boots is not to get them with steel toes. Get them with composite toes, same safety standards, lighter, won't suck the heat out of your toes when it's cold.
Also called non metallic safety toe.

the most comfy steel toes I have come across. they really do not feel like steel toes at all, esp. when paired with some nice wool socks. OSHA requires that we wear them in certain work environments too. i now routinely scour the interweb looking for deals on them so i can hoard all the ones in my size.

Years and years ago, I was doing some work in London during January and it was bitterly cold and damp; my feet were miserable. Oddly, I noticed the crew were all carrying small slabs of styrofoam - maybe 1' square - that they tied to their back belt loops with a string. When I asked, they said that, whenever they had to stand still, they'd stand on the foam, insulating their feet from the cold that would seep up through their soles. I tried it; a little awkward, but it worked brilliantly. I suppose these days we'd just use those chem-pack toe warmers.

Another reason to get composite toed shoes: Steel toed shoes are a pain in the butt when you pass through metal detectors. And when you have to take them off for subsequent passage through the X-ray machine, everyone sees the holes in your socks.

I run through this drill often enough to regret my steel toed shoes.

the ultimate end-all do-all boots are those made by hand all-leather ('cept the toe where required, and insulation can be added) from companies like White's and Nick's.

I have two pair, and no other need for any boots any time. Just had one pair re-soled (by Nick's). Both are seven years old*. Will get maybe one more resole before having a rebuild done. I had three pairs of Danner (USA-models) before the Nick's, but had to wear orthodics in those. Gave all them away. (no need for orthodics in the very supportive Nick's)

*worn daily 3 seasons. Sidi's and flip-flops are the only other shoes i wear with regularity.

Can's speak to the hardtoe option as i don't require me to wear 'em that way. Ask Garro 'bout smokejumpers. If your feet ain't happy...

I only get this when going to the Big Show (Denver next yo), and don't mind one bit (i plan the socks ahead of time) as these things would be a bear to tote in luggage and i'm not going to wear anything else when i'm on my feet 18 hours per day for 3 days.
