I don't go for necklaces, bracelets, class rings, pinkie rings, earrings, any of that, but a nice watch (whatever that means to you) is a great way to add a little style and class everyday. I also think that a well selected watch tells me a little bit about a person at a glance. If all you need to do is tell time, then your cell phone is more than sufficient, I view a watch as an opportunity for a little something more.

    He stole my sales pitch!!!!!

Could not agree more. That and it's a small machine that you wear

+1! And in many cases, a small machine that was carefully crafted, highly engineered, and if cared for can make an heirloom that has value beyond money.

And, yes, watches are a waste of money, as are lots of the bikes here, the entire "things I want now" thread, the camera thread we have, and most other things we talk about.
I really do think the Casio I mentioned is a phenomenal watch, and you may know, it is something of a cult watch.

There is real beauty, to me, in vast amount of technology and know-how concentrated in such an everyday object. Thousands of man-years of effort went into manufacturing a tiny, light device that solves one of the single most important and elemental technological challenges in human history: the ability to very accurately tell time anywhere and in most conditions on Earth. I’m not aware of any device that really surpasses it. The fact that for the price of lunch you can purchase the technological holy grail of many millennia is an incredible achievement. And, as a bonus, these things are like cockroaches – you cannot kill them.

There is also beauty in the decorative aspects and precise movements of mechanical watches. I have two. It is just a different sort of beauty, which to me at least, is more akin to jewelry. Nothing wrong with that.

That's a good way to put it, a different kind of beauty. And at this point, a mechanical watch is much closer to jewelry, which isn't a bad thing. The amount of effort, engineering, and history that went into the IWC I have now is pretty incredible, but it doesn't tell time as well as my Timex, and it doesn't even have a barometer or compass! At least my IWC doesn't look, like ChaseA said, a beeper with a strap.

It isn't really anything special, but I like it! The bezel ring is aftermarket, but I will be swapping it out soon.

I've been trading timepieces for a couple of years now, trying to find something that I actually like wearing. I think I may have found it.

Looks as though Seiko is going to a hacking & handwind movement for the monster. Good upgrade for a solid piece, but it comes with a big jump in price as well. Not for waifs.

Yep, a Ball Trainmaster automatic. Haven't been able to get an exact date of manufacture on it, yet.

I have a non-functional manual wind National Watch Company pocket watch with a very similar dial. Too expensive to get it fixed, so I just keep it as a memento. I love the train/rail-master look. Enjoy it!

thing about rolexes is that they can't tell time.
    other than that?
    they're boss.
    for real.
i have one (25 year-old submariner which my daddy bought me new as a graduation gift)).
if ya don't drop say 200 bucks ever' now n' agin', them fuckers'll go off.
i figger that rascal has cost me what my sweet daddy paid for it just to keep it running.
but i don't rock a wristwatch at all anymore.
i just pull my cheapass flip phone (no "smart phone") outta me pocket.
look at it and see i'm late.
(which, BTW, makes no difference since i'm the boss)

know the difference twixt a real gen-u-wine rolex and the one ya pick up in patty pong in bangkok?
the patty pong watch'll tell ya what time it is.
    hardeeharharhar!
    accurate.

    out.

Makes a skinny cyclist arm look extra puny (not commenting on your arm, unless it is puny), but it's an awesome watch.

swinging that watch around compensates for never front-ring shifting w/ your left hand.
    Auk's words to live by:
Blow up and pin a picture of M. Bartoli on your wall. When you achieve that position, stop. Until then, stretch, ride, stretch, ride, eat less, and ride more.

The key is actually wearing one on each arm to maintain proper balance.

Surprisingly it isn't that heavy...if is bulky and I have a bad tendency to bang it into things
