    Default Chain suck fin

Has anyone ever considered brazing a "fin" to under side of the RH chainstay to avoid the deaded chain suck
Was considering a design for my current build and thought I would check to see if i was re-inventing the wheel
The fin would have some small tapped holes which i would screw a plastic strip, the sucking chain would strike the plastic prior to jambing between the chain stay and chain ring

    Cheers

Under the stay, not on top, to reduce the chance of the chain jamming between the chain ring and stay. Not jamming between the stay and tire as the Shimano shark fin was meant to do.

In any case, a fin will not prevent chain suck. Chain suck happens, even on elevated stay frames, because of worn parts, poor lubrication, dirty drivetrains, and/or poor chainline.

Having the chain jam is a result of chain suck. Better to prevent the chain suck in the first place than trying to "fix" the result with add-on patches. The worst chain jams I have had were on bikes with anti-suck devices.

Yup, note the scrapes on the brake and stay where the chain jammed anyway.

I used to do this on our mountain bikes. I'd braze a plate with a couple of threaded holes that could take an aluminium plate that mirrored the profile of the chainrings. I think I saw Keith Bontrager do it first.

    Steven beat me to it.
Just don't let the little plates get loose or you will have an exceptional one-time chainsuck.

The Ringle Anti Chain Suck Thing was the same idea. Worked well enough.

apparently all the MTB people that are worried about this have gone to something that mounts on an isgc mounting plate.

@Shiggy: what do you mean by elevated CS? I get frames in regularly with normal CSs. Once it's fixed they often want a protector like this:

You do not know what an elevated chain stay frame is? It is impossible for the chain to jam between the ring and stay because the chainstay is above the rings.

My main point is the jamming in the frame is NOT chain suck. It is a RESULT of chainsuck, which can and should be addressed and fixed before resorting to the anti-jam devices.

I have had chainsuck on a E-stay bike to the point of the chain wrapping around and jamming against the chain coming onto the top of the ring. The chain never touched the frame.

No, increased RD tension does not cure the basic issues that cause chainsuck. If your rings are worn and/or have burrs, using poor lube, and/or have a dirty drivetrain, it can still happen with any bike using a rear derailleur.

If you can still get the chain to suck into the chainstays while riding with a Shadow+ you* have some serious problems. Time to take up knitting.

*not you personally, referring to the generic rider with chronic chainsuck problems.

yeah, I was playing with one of those SRAM deralleurs and it had enough tension that it was a little scary

To repete, the jamming of the chain in the frame is NOT chainsuck, but just a result of it.
Using a clutched RD cage is still just treating the symptoms rather than fixing the cause.

on a modern hardtail, with modern components, the cause is a horribly worn chain and front chainrings and usually some bad weather conditions. seems like an easy cause to treat.

i used to get bad chainsuck on my ibis mojo fs. i cured it with a shorter chain and a single chainring up front.
