You obviously didn't stop by Cafe Latex's booth at NAHBS or you'd know that there is no reason to remove a wheel from a bike when you have a flat. Some folks just like doing it the hard way I suppose ;)

Glenn, thanks for the kind words. I'm hoping you're recovered from NAHBS enough so that we can start up again. I'm getting antsy. I need to file something and/or weld something.

    Glenn,
Whats the point of only selling complete bikes and not just the frameset?

For me, tubeless was more trouble than it was worth.

Glenn, do you have a favorite build? Do you have a least favorite/important lesson in saying no build?

The main point is maintaining a certain control over the final product. I need for the customer to be 'wowed' on the moment of delivery, putting someones old Shimano 600/Ultegra would detract from that moment. Some nice Campy eleven speed and a Chris King headset goes a long way to ensuring long term love.

Also, the new components are always a better value. I built a bike for a bike shop owner recently, and found that my costs on the build kit were lower than the clients.

Invariably, the customer would also need a new headset, stem, front derailleur, cableset/housings, seatpost, etc. Add those costs to the equation and I firmly believe it is always a better value to ebay what you've got and spend the bread on the a complete new bike.

    thanks,

    GT

I had a guy (yet another engineer...) order a fully loaded touring rig. He was about 6' 4" and planned on carrying tons of gear on his annual self-supported tour accross the US. It needed to be bombproof. I went with True Temper Supertherm, double oversized lugs, tandem grade fork blades, etc. I got a call from the guy maybe two weeks later, he had got some miles on it and absolutely loved it. For me, this was high praise from a cranky engineer (you know those touring guys have unique personalities).

Best lesson? Whenever the potential client starts out with "I have some ideas on the design...." or if the client has actual part numbers from True temper catalog - All red flags. One larger size gentleman wanted me to fillet braze him a bike from True Temper S3. I told him it wasn't the bike that I build and I didn't like the idea. Guy got completely pissed off at me, I was glad because he would've been a 'challenge' to work with through the build process.

    Thanks!

it gets harder and harder to get polished silver components, as opposed to black/carbon.

The guy that owns that bike is fond of saying, 'I have an angry snake between my legs'.
