I've taken to wearing this on my new LeMond Revolution. It does wonders for winter weight loss. Plus, don't give me any of that cushy Mackinaw plaidy woolly shit, that's for SoCal winters and guys who like to sit on straight seat posts. There's never been anything as good as the original Tin Cruiser since before Simplex made derailleurs (and we took to the French spelling).

We used to wear the Filson tincloth pants in Yosemite. YC I suspect stole the concept for the original Patagonia climbing pants. Both were great. Also have an old Filson Mackinaw that although not plaid..is farking bulletproof and too warm for almost all Massachusetts winter weather. It excels if you are spending extended periods outside in wet snowy cold weather...I mean like days at a shot. Way nicer then any fiberpile garment and a lot more rugged. Have some Filson luggage that rocks, too. I know the co. has been sold in the last few years...wonder how the quality is. I am sure the prices went even further skyward.

Filson Oil Cloth is great until water vapor builds up on the inside ('cause it doesn't breathe) and forms sheets of ice.

If I were going to buy another Filson garment for my upper body that wasn't wool, I'd get the Dry Finish: http://www.filson.com/products/dry-f...taProduct=1011

    Timely post.

I was quite happy that I wore my double tin cloth pants this morning when my stihl kicked back right on my right thigh - it made it through one layer.
    Stuff it tough as crap.

Yeah, breathability is low - if you wear tin cloth you want it for the protection.

Wool cape coat. Black not plaid. I tell anyone who'll listen and some who won't.

When I get my retirement property someday I'll get a tin cruiser to go with it.

Filson's got a short jacket now that is almost as good as the Tellason jean jacket.

Here in God's country (and home to his most righteous disciple, CC Filson), you want the Tin Cloth Packer Coat. It's the cruiser with a seamless mantle that keeps all the rain from ever even getting to the fabric that's closer to your skin. And when you get it, be sure to get at least the moleskin zip-in liner if not the mackinaw one, or size it to fit over a separate garment (which is really the better way). That's how you deal with the perspiration and freezing problem inside the coat.

Of course, head across the mountains and you find the folks that shoot FBI agents and live in little huts in the wilderness as they plan bombings. For them, and for those who chase them down, there's only one choice: Kitanica.com. Your choice of different coat styles but they are all ... well ... amazing, and all should have the heavy zip-in fleece sweater for when head up to Montana in January to order your Kirk.

Those are awesome coats. I have one of the old single-layer mackinaws, (a now-discontinued model) and it works great. That double mac is almost too hot unless the weather is as you describe....or if you're going to be spending days and days in very cold/wet conditions. I can't believe they're up to over 400 bucks!

I have a double mac. I've been loving the near-zero temperatures here in NYC, so I have opporunity to wear it. Hopeless when it goes above 18-20d.

Here's one that's very bit as good as the Filson for half the money, and it's made in Minnesota: Bemidji Woolen Mills - Menswear - North Shore Double Back Double Front Jacket

I wear the single version bird hunting down to zero and I wouldn't want anything more when walking. It's a lifetime garment for $160: Bemidji Woolen Mills - Menswear - Voyageurs Jac Coat

Filson and I were not getting along.

And then I found Filson Italy's "Black Label", and specifically their Miner jacket made for the Japanese market. Took some searching...
