Best Coffee Grinder - Input Welcome

I'm currently using the Breville "Smart grinder" and I am not happy with it; I will change it as soon as I can afford a Vario W or Mazzer mini. I'm looking for improved consistency in grind and in dose.

Mostly used for strong espresso through a Rancilio Silvia with the PID upgrade.

I have the Breville and have been quite impressed especially for the price. The grinds are decent but whenever I change beans I have to clean it out as grinds do get caught in the "chute" gets annoying if you switch beans or grind frequently. I switch from caffeinated to decaf and that's when it's a pain.

Mazzer Mini for me - non electric doser model. Used on eBay...does the trick.

If you are mostly making coffee for one or two people the Hario Skerton is a good option. I own one and although it's manual it's not like the manual box-type grinders in terms of force needed to turn the crank. It is simple, takes up very little counter space and is easy to clean. The thread size for the included jar is the same as a pint-size Mason jar, so you can grind your decaf and regular separately. It is also very quiet compared to the motorized grinders.

I've used an Iberital for espresso and drip for about 15 years so far. I'm on my second set of burrs, and the thing keeps going on. For office/single use, I've found the Porlex tall to be very good.

I've used a Porlex Tall hand mill every day for about the last 2 years. Does a fine job and it's about the only exercise my little arms get.

I've had a Baratza Virtuoso for several years, I've replaced a motor and a worm gear on it. Great customer service and very easy to work on.

I like my porlex except I wore down the shaft and so the original handle doesn't work anymore. One of these days I need to do something about it besides be lazy and use vise grips.

Not (easily anyway) portable, but infinitely adjustable and by all appearances indestructible. I've had mine about a month and half now. The burrs are just breaking in.

Like j44ke, I have had the $30 Cuisinart Grind Central for over a year. Does a good grind for the weekend moka pot use, then I take the portable stainless canister w/sealable lid to work with me for one-cup pour-overs since our standard office coffee is just brown water.

Another baratza, entry level, an older version of the encore, used daily for going on 5 years with no problems. I got it as a refurb directly from baratza. They are not always in stock or easy to find on their site, but I saw the nicer model (vario) at $360 and encore for $99, about %20-30 off

I second, third or forth the Baratza. I've got a Virtuoso ... its a bit pricey, ~200, for the home brewer but does a really nice job!!

My only worry about Baratza is they use a lot of plastic--at least there was a lot in the Virtuoso I had for a while. At $300+ I'd look for a Mazzer or something at that tier. The less plastic the better. Could easily get a Mini or better on the bay and they are indestructible.

Picked up a Capresso Infinity burr grinder. It sucks. Do the ones y'all are referring to above create the effing mess this Capresso unit is making? Little bits of coffee everywhere. The static is driving me crazy. This thing is going back.

I *really* recommend the Baratza Preciso. Expensive, but it actually does better than my $1300 Italian shop grinder, in terms of grind quality. The static issue is very small -- maybe one shot of waste over a couple months.
