    Default Pirate earring

I will admit "pirate earrings" are not among the must-have accessories for today's fashionable cyclist, and certainly not among the items that I could pull off without looking like a twat. If you are willing to offer recommendations for top-quality hoop rings, though, I'm all ears.

But the small gold ring does seem to crop up rather conspicuously in photos of particularly well-composed (dare I say "Euro") riders of the past, though. I noticed Phillippe Gilbert wearing one several years ago, and have noticed a number of other riders wearing them since.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but this seems to be a strangely common look in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Is there any particular reason why so many riders wore them? I must know the reasoning behind this massive tactical advantage.

If you want to post photos or enthuse about this particularly awesome item, feel free.

Just because it used to be cool in europe in the 1980's and pro-cyclists usually have a very bad taste and suffer from a huge lag in term of fashion.

Earrings can be taken out too easily.

For true fans of the era:

    Got some cash
    Bought some wheels
    Took it out

    Lost Control

    But we're alright

I had my right ear pierced in 1992 by a real, "bro." Totally, "left is right, and right is wrong." Type shit.

I did not care.... I partied.

My six year old gal will occsionally ask. "Dad you have you ear pierced.?"

I always say, "Lucy, he'll yes I did........."

    No questions, and no regrets.

As a 90s hardcore kid, I had hoops in both ears. Then I started gauging them out (not near anything like todays plugs). I got one caught on a branch mountain biking. It hurt.

I took them out that painful day in 1998 and never put them back in.

Some could say a $7000 wristwatch looks stupider than a $50 hoop earring. Who cares what others think.

I was totally Krishna Core! I listened to a little of the chugga chugga. But I was more into stuff like split lip, into another , endpoint, 108, lifetime. I'm still veg and don't drink. I think I am in the running for oldest straightedge person with the dudes in H20.

Back to earrings, get one if you want one. But watch out for branches!

Two holes in the left ear, used to wear them, now find it too big of a pain in the ass to take 'em in and out.

Tattoos, on the other hand, require much less effort...

I had big ol' stretched earlobes until my job got too corporate to keep them in. Pretty much shrunk down to normal size, though I can still get a decent size ring in if I wanted to. The first time I rode without jewelry in, it was strange to not hear the whooshing from the holes. I don't even think of the holes until my niece (or wife, or friends) want me to put in earrings as some sort of party trick. This was probably TMI.

When I was 17-18 I took a safety pin and some ice. Zik! Both ears done.
It took ages to heal 'cause the holes weren't straight, but it's ok.
Why should I regret such a simple thing?
