thought about it, went with a new one instead.
i would love to get a cf-5 or -7 or some such thing, but mainly after i put in a fuel injected motor and a new drivetrain, better suspension, etc. weekend cars that are unreliable i would imagine grow tiresome, no?

Nightmare. Employee relations + AMC quality control of that era = better options abound. Hell, the GEO Trackers are probably better cars, and a CJ-5's equal offroad.

How tall are you? Try a CJ-5 on first, there isn't much room in there. Also as to build quality bear in mind that the enthusiast community is super deep and there are lots and lots of CJ-5's that have had all the crappiness worked out of them over the years. Super simple too. Buy one that's been someone else's project.

P.S. Joe my real advice is this: Only buy a project/weekend car if you have a dedicated indoor space to park it and work on it. Otherwise it's just too hard to get under it and get anything done. Beyond that, buy something simple with good parts availability and enthusiast support. Obviously you'd be right on the money with a CJ-5 or -7.

Saw a McLaren 650S Spyder on my ride last weekend. Looked somewhat exotic.

Unrelated, we are starting a new round of car shopping. Need something that holds 3 car seats, a 60-lb dog, and all related personal belongings. The new Volvo XC90 looks interesting give the true 3rd row, but I am partial to VW's and the Touareg might fit the bill, with potential TDI engine to boot.

We have older XC90 and the third row gets used much more than we expected. Ours has a built-in booster in the center 2nd row and we could fit car seats on either side. I don't think we could fit 3 baby seats, but 1 baby seat and 2 boosters, yeah that works. We are set to replace it though and the new XC90 is in the top 3 on our list. Our only gripe with Volvo is the service center is easily 40 minutes away with traffic.

Potentially. But, as Brandon noted above, the lack of dealer network or service centers can be a real pain. We're also in the market right now for something similar and Volvo came off the list because the only two dealers in town are a pain to get to and pretty lacking in the customer service department. It's too bad as I'm a big fan of the cars.

As a former TJ owner, let me say Jeeps are fantastic fun and I loved mine dearly. However...they are the ultimate "your best friend has one" car. They require a lot of compromises and the 10% fun doesn't always outweight the 90% work. And a CJ-5 would be a lot of work, even one worked over properly -- V-8 swap, suspension mods that are sensible, etc etc.

Oh, and never drive it on the highway.

matthew: I see. I haven't dealt with a Volvo dealer. I do like the thought of a Volvo wagon with a manual transmission. Alas.
