One of the best things I ever learned as a welder was how to switch hands.
Oh boy, here we go down the dark painful road of shame again. I finally get some decent looking passes and Arch is telling me I'm welding backwards, now you're saying I need to switch hands. Frick.

Tell me about it. I can't pick my nose with my left hand. I just have it so I look symmetrical.

Interesting. I've often wondered how many of you guys are ambidexterous. I'm probably 60/40. I think it's good for your brain to work on it. That's why I try to drink my beer with my left hand now and then.

I had a job welding fittings on aluminum tubes in a fixture. You had to weld one side then switch hands to weld the other side, otherwise you just couldn't get everything around the fixture. I did 80-100 of those things a day for almost a year. I was pretty much a necessity for that job, but since I've left there I've found I'm pretty much a rarity.

    Hey Carl,

Thought I'd ask a couple of questions here to see if you're still checking the Smoked Out thread. First, how is the house/shop coming along? My wife and I have had a couple of houses designed and built and know how much stress is involved. Hope it's going well. Second, last NAHBS was to be the final time you presented the Business of Framebuilding seminar; are there plans for someone to replace you or have you considered offering a video/book on the subject? Other than that hope all is well. Some nice bikes coming out of Bozeman.

    Cheers,

    Jayme

Thanks guys! I'm keepin my eye on the place. If I see an opportunity to add something valuable I will. Thing is, there is so much knowledge out there I rarely have much to add that is't already said.

Carl, your last posts in the forum were valuable indeed, it's always a pleasure reading experienced people's words, they rise the bar (and draw "the line")

    Hi Carl

What happened with your carbon frames? As I recall you spent quite a bit of time (and I assume money) getting set up, but you no longer seem to offer carbon as a material option. Was this a case of you not enjoying the fabrication process or customers not wanting the product?

    Thanks,
    Tristan

Thanks for the question. About three years ago I sold my commercial building which had enough space for me to keep my carbon processes separate from my metal processes. My new space just isn't big enough for both so I only moved my metal production. That being said, I am committed to carbon fiber and will offer it again but have had to deploy a separate set of resources to do so. I'm currently in the development stages of something that I'm very excited about. Once we're ready you'll hear about it. Stay tuned.
