Re: Drum Corps
My junior high and high school band didn't really march. We were orchestral or jazz. I didn't really dig much marching stuff, because I couldn't find a "feel" to it. Technique alone never really did it for me. Jazz was the same. I grew up in Memphis, rock and roll seemed to be in the air/ the water/ whatever.
I had friends in New Orleans, and would road trip down there once a month. There was this beat. It was a march. It was jazz. But it had a feel. It was inescapable.

It was designed for parades/ funerals/ etc. It was designed so you could shake hands/ take a drink/ pass a joint and not drop the beat.
It was this and the clave. 2/3 clave. 3/2 clave. Existed somewhere between straight and swung. That was a new place.
My 17 year old mind was blown wide open. Actually saw this guy doing it, no idea at the time who he was.
