    Default Documentaries

We finally came out of the stone age and got Netflix to supplement (and probably replace) our cable. Netflix has a boatload of documentaries and we've been watching a few a week, at least. It's a format that I really enjoy, especially as the majority of movies coming out these days don't interest me much. Anyway, a couple that I really enjoyed recently are:

    - Blackfish (2013) - IMDb - a documentary about killer whales in captivity focusing on both the risk they pose to trainers and the mistreatment of keeping these whales confined.

    - Carl Panzram: The Spirit of Hatred and Vengeance (2012) - IMDb - about the serial killer Carl Panzram and his autobiography written in the 1920s. I'd never heard of him before...while the film was ok, his story was equally fascinating and disturbing.

If there are any other documentary fans out there, let's hear some of your favorites. My queue is running low.

Thank you sir. I've seen these three and I agree completely. I'll be adding the others to the queue.

We just got rid of cable and went NetFlix, Amazon Prime and Hulu Plus. No looking back.

Beware Mr. Baker - Crazy movie on Ginger Baker

A Band Called Death - Insane story.

The Summit - A story of death on K2, which is not as grim as it sounds.

    Bill Cunningham New York

McConkey - The life and death of skier, base jumper Shane McConkey.

Not a documentary... but god damn if I don't find Trailer Park Boys hilarious! I am most definitely not their target audience. But it is hilarious.

Last Days Here, about Pentagram and Bobby Liebling's decades-long struggle with addiction, is engrossing.
Jiro Dreams of Sushi made me dream of sushi.
    Slaying the Badger is great.
The Queen of Versailles turned me into a Marxist.
The This Blue Line, by Errol Morris, is a classic.
Grizzly Man. A friend of the family was interviewed for it (he was the chief medical examiner for the State of Alaska.) RIP Franc.
Ray Harryhausen, Special Effects Titan made me long for my childhood.
Bill Cunningham New York is great.

I was really bothered by how some of the people interviewed reacted to his death. I think that was more shocking than seeing how he lived.

We decided on this one tonight hoping for something less heavy than last night's serial killer film. Less murder, but I can't believe these people are for real.

Herzog's Lessons of Darkness, or any Herzog really.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams is worth a look.
