Chucho Valdes at Berklee last week. Beethoven and Iyar at the Longy School this Wednesday.
Tomorrow, I get to see Ron Swanson playing Ignatius Jacques Reilly. Should be a hoot.

I saw Fuzz last night, and they were every bit as awesome live as on record.

Trombone Shorty and his band are unbelievable live. Shorty is a virtuoso and so is everyone in his band. I haven't researched the history of his guitarist and drummer but those guys have power metal chops as well as the subtlety and range to play the amalgam that is Shorty's music.

The Beethoven and Iyar concert was awesome. Jennifer Koh and Shai Wosner played two Beethoven violin concertos and, sandwiched in between, was a brand-new Vijay Iyar piece. Their playing was energetic and emotional, just great for the small hall at the Longy School.
I'd never heard Iyar's "classical" work and I found it just as engaging and dramatic as his "jazz" and the Beethoven. One section ended with the violin playing this long, scratchy multi-string tone that would have sounded perfectly natural coming from Sonic Youth.
And I had a great moment at intermission. I said to my wife that our Iyar-loving friend should be hearing this, then got up from my balcony seat to see her taking photos of the stage. By the time I got downstairs to say hi, she'd cornered Vijay. So I got to meet him too, which was cool.
GO!
Tomorrow night, my son turns 18 and we will see Hot Tuna. Jorma and Jack have longevity, as I first saw them perform in 1978.

Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave) next week. Acoustic performance. So long as my chemo doesn't knock me around to much.

Ears are still ringing from last night. Dino Jr. was all sorts of rad, despite the "special guests" list being comparatively lackluster when looking at the weekend shows. In any event, really stoked I can tick them off the list of "bands I needed to see before I/they die."

Got a last-minute invitation to see Joanna Newsome on Sunday night. I'd been reading about her and was curious, so it was a great opportunity.
Still not sure what I think of her. She is definitely intriguing and I need to listen some more.
But it was a really fun night.
GO!
Her stuff has morphed a little over the years. Ys is still my favorite and wonderfully done. I wasn't surprised when I found out Albini was involved.
Also - there is a youtube of her on David Letterman - the audience's reaction is funny and repulsive.

So I have tickets to a David Bromberg concert with his big band in the spring. I get this email "News about the David Bromberg concert..." I'm thinking oh, damn, something happened. Yes, something did. They added Jorma Kaukonen, Keb Mo and Larry Campbell.
Heh heh heh. Me and Karen have front row for this one... heh heh heh.
