Apple will brick your phone as a "security measure" What's Up With Error 53? | iFixit
I downloaded El Capitan onto my Macbook last week and from what I can tell it's killing my display.
I updated my iPhone to iOS 9.2, only to discover that I could no longer sync my iPhone to my Mac without updating the OS to Yosemite/El Coercione, which I didn't want to do but had to in order to back up my iPhone.
In other news, I just dug out my old 40GB 3rd-Gen FireWire iPod and my Mac (running OS X 10.6.8 and iTunes 11.4) won't recognise it... #sadface

What are these "smart phone" devices of which you guys speak? ;)
It's one of the most useful tools I've owned. It helped me find my cousin's house in Chicago the other day, driving a big truck and pulling a trailer. I have listed myself on flights in order to get home early. I talk to my sister in Europe for free (obviously, nothing is ever totally free...) over FaceTime audio. I check weather reports and observe real time weather radar for my job while getting ready to push back from the gate. I waste time on this website using my phone. I text friends all over the world and can get immediate responses. This technology has, for better or for worse, made the world a much smaller place.
They're awful devices and I don't know what I'd do without mine! My iPhone 5S is going strong 2 1/2 years on.
I know. But they are so ubiquitous in our lives. I have a friend who lives 'off the grid' when it comes to technology and it's kind of refreshing to see. His technology march stopped in about 1978. I am not sure if he's ever used a modern computer and I know he has no cellular phone. A conversation like this one would be meaningless to him.
He think's 8-speed bikes are totally over the top and hopes to buy a new bike with downtube shifters. I try to tell him that he will have to scour the internet and his eyes glaze over.

Tell me about it. I treated myself to an iPhone 6 two months ago and it won't sync at all with my 11 year old Mac because of the issue you mention compounded by the fact that the hardware cant accept the OS upgrade. So as of Monday I'm the proud owner of a new Mac Mini....just so I can keep my iPhone up-to-date etc.
do you guys get the daily reminders to update iOS on your phones?

That's the trap—don't update if the computer you are backing up to isn't running/can't run/you don't want to update to El Coercione.
Come to think of it, bobonli's experience is how I fell down the rabbit hole—I got a replacement iPhone running 9.2 and couldn't sync to my computer unless I updated it. And I'm not about to pay for 128GB of iCloud storage to backup my
iPhone.
Want to know what erks me? I lost my phone, no problem (well, not really, but...), I have a backup, due for an upgrade. Got a smaller phone, planned on using cloud for music, instead of the way I had done it before. Oh look, no room to restore from backup, no way to not restore the music files to make it fit. I wont own a phone that big again, and have no way to access my backed up info.
How big of a phone do you need? I have a couple of spare iPhone 5's with decent amounts of storage. I was planning on selling them but haven't gotten around to it. I could send you one, you pop a SIM card into it, setup and restore/backup the phone, delete enough stuff to fit on your new phone, backup again, then restore my phone to factory settings and send it back to me. Voilà your backup will now fit on your new phone.
