Furniture Restoration

Hey All, New to this forum but been across the hall since 2005. Decided it was time to join and frequent this forum. No doubt it will be a nice change. My hobby, now full time, is restoring period furniture. Below is an example of the type work I do. Very rewarding when you see the faces of clients that had no hope for their family heirloom. I also build custom tube guitar amps and repair instruments, mainly guitar. I have ridden seriously since I was 21 (almost 38 years ago). Rode competitivelly for years until a hit and run driver stopped my ability to compete on the level I was use to. Bummer!!! Anyway, Hi to everyone and I look forward to reading and contributing to posts.

That is some very nice work. Where are you located? We have had some bad experiences with furniture restoration. Most of them seem to be wood putty and magic marker specialists, working in the disaster wake of bad moving companies.

My favorite though was the guy who re-attached a leg on a chair that had been in the wife's family for generations. When I went to pick it up, he showed me the front and there was a slight surface irregularity where he had counter bored and inserted a wood screw and then puttied over the new work. Color and finish matched pretty good. He was so proud. Then I turned the chair around and there was 1/4 inch of sharp galvanized wood screw sticking out of the back! All he had to say was, "Crap, why don't you come back in two days."

Anyway, that is my story. I appreciate good work like this. Welcome to the forum!

I guess that this goes here...this is a Shaker Workshop rock maple footstool kit that I built in 1986. 31 years and three kids later, it was time to refinish and retape. Shaker Workshop is still in business and the piece looks brand spanking new, with a little added patina on the maple.

I'm somewhat embarrassed to say that I purchased this cherry paw foot table kit back in 1991 from the Bartley Collection and I've been meaning to build it since then...don't ask. Anyway, here she is in all her glory with a few coats of Danish oil, ready for 3-4 coats of paste wax. The pieces are joined with hidden dowels but I might even add a few exposed pegs for a really authentic look...we shall see.
