That's a horrible idea. The beans are really not done until they start to smoke so if you are ok with your house smelling like an old shoe go for it.
I'm roasting in our addition with two ventilation systems going full bore.

Roasting my own beans sounds right up my alley, but I'd rather not buy any more junk.

I don't know why the old shoe reference struck a chord with me...

    Darn.

TooTall, roast a pound of the good stuff, slap that label on there and I'll be first in line! "Notes of old leather and mastik"

The last thing I need is another hobby... but I'll be danged if this doesn't pique the heck outta my interest.

RW that's pretty much on the money. Luckily I was not drinking coffee at the time reading this.

Well Def old man. If I can find a way to print labels without blowing my children's inheritence, sure. Ahh, just remembered I don't have kids. Hmmm.

well, I've got 5lbs of green Colombian and a Poppery II headed my way.

This has me written all over it. Coffee and modifying small kitchen appliances. What's not to love?

Well, first roast done. Probably a little under-done. Guess I'll find out tomorrow morning.

    Fun stuff.

Edit: City? Full City? The color seems lighter than I would expect for FC, but the edges are rounded a fair bit. How do you guys determine roast level?

I'm still a newb so don't ask me. To my eye they look a wee bit less than FC.

For the record, I'm sure I've ruined 6 or 7 lbs so far....but I'm on it now.

Glad to see this thread got resurrected!

Like TooTall says, you can't really do this in a kitchen unless you are a bachelor. I started roasting in a cast iron frying pan but got banished to the garage after about 4 roasts. On the upside, the banishment came with a Gene Cafe roaster, so for the last 190 or so roasts I have been trying to figure it all out.

Dear diary, on April 2 I might have walked away from the roaster again and maybe the fire department arrived after all the house alarms went off and my stuuupid alarm company failed to cancel the call.

My new coffee roasting mantra is "never leave the beans alone".

I disabled the thermostat on my popper. I'm definitely getting closer. In any case, I'm having fun ruining beans left and right.
Fun to see how a bit more heat and a bit more time after roasting improves the cup.

Don't worry, I'm not leaving anything unattended, especially not now with the disabled thermostat.

You guys have gotten me into this silly habit. I picked up a $20 popper and some beans from Sweet marias and I've been happily roasting small batches. I'm roasting out on the back deck and the fire department hasn't arrived yet. I think my beans are significantly better than the beans I've been buying but my girlfriend keeps asking me what are we drinking and she has been non committal in responding to me asking what do you think? In any event, this is fun and it's amazing what a difference a change of parameters makes such as roasting time, how you treat the beans post roast, and the amount of off gassing time.

defspace, those beans look underdone. They look like my first batch. I bet they lack in flavor.

My next cooking project is going to be turning with more seriousness to salad dressings.

Yep! Subsequent roasts with a bit more heat/time have produced tastier results. They had a huge sour spike right down the middle of the cup. Not pleasant. I'm guessing that's the grassy/green taste people talk about. In sonic terms, it reminds me of listening to music from a phone speaker - nothing but harsh midrange.

looks like a good coffee and i thought the roast looked nice. might be a combination of the acidity of that particular origin and the popcorn popper roast.
anyway, if it tastes better to you with a little more roast then that's where you should roast it!!
