FINALLY made it to the Dew Drop Inn, which bills itself as the oldest rural jazz club in the country. It's a little old dance hall next to an old Baptist church and the likes of Kid Ory and Louis Armstrong played there back in the day. Ride by it every week for years now, but they have an irregular schedule (tonight was the last one until it cools off again in September) so had never caught a show. Sultry Louisiana night, no a/c, 5 piece band of clarinet, violin, bass, electric and acoustic guitars, playing everything from traditional old standards to swing and some gypsy-flavored stuff. And the ladies at the church next door serve a $10 plate of jambalaya, dirty rice, or red beans & rice, with fried catfish or chicken, cole slaw or potato salad on the side and a square of simple cake. Couldn't help but thinking: if these walls could talk,....120 years of jamming. need I add that the acoustics were great, just warm cypress walls, no drywall, etc. and a nice lawn for chairs as the music fills the street from the open doors and windows. a real treat.

oh, the band was the "HOT CLUB OF NEW ORLEANS"

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds last night at Massey Hall. And I'll be there again tonight.
If you know Nick Cave, you know the Bad Seeds are super tight, and Nick tends to wander: the second shot is him ten rows deep, singing in the crowd.

Brian Wilson last night. The years have really taken their toll on Brian, which can totally be expected. His band and the overall performance was outstanding. So nice to hear pet sounds done live.

Guitarists blazing, horns blaring and keyboard growling, St. Paul & The Broken Bones played an incredible show at Wolftrap. The band consists of three horn players, guitarist, bass, drummer and keyboard. The lead singer is Paul Janeway. The funky soulful almost big band show was both a throwback and an evolution in music. I applaud them for a great show.

Saw Billy Joel at Lambeau Field last night. Had seen him about 1978 or so in Madison and the music is still great. I had seen a few clips of him in recent years where his voice seemed to be going, but last night it was much better than I had hoped for.

Good mix of known and lesser-known songs. He also did three covers that the crowd loved: Beatles "A Day in the Life" (and he talked about a Beatles anniversary and thanked the audience for indulging him), AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" incredibly well done (Joel on rhythm guitar) with one of his roadies (!) doing lead vocals with his best Brian Johnson moves, and one of his guitarists doing a respectable cover of Puccini's aria "Nessun dorma" -- not quite Adrea Bocelli, but still very good.

Joel himself didn't quite have the energy for the crowd that I had hoped. He was bothered by some bugs (swatting during songs, and even brought out a yellow fly swatter that he played with on and off. Still the music was great, the venue was great, and he did a 5-song encore.

Turns out that Alexisonfire cancelled last nights show, and the upcoming three. They announced it approx. 3 hours before the doors opened, which means we were already across the boarder and had our data plans off since we were now in Canada. Found out by rolling up to the venue with a note on the door... Bummer.. couldn't find any food on Danforth that seemed appealing, so we turned around came back to Buffalo. Dang. Longgggg Sunday.

Saw Peter Asher and Albert Lee at the Van Dyck. Different for sure. Peter and Gordon were Asher's history, pop songs I heard when I was a kid but never knew who did them. Pop songs stripped of the pop treatment done by two guys on acoustic guitars or one guy on a bass and one on guitar make you go damn that was actually a good song not just a good pop song. Albert Lee's a freaking artist. Killed a Jimmy Webb song, I don't know the name. They did a Green Day song and killed it. It's about the song, that they made clear.

"The Highwayman" I knew that song but looking over at Karen and seeing her just blown away was the coolest thing. Like the time we were in the park and seeing her expression when Michelle Shocked sang "When I grow up I want to be an old woman" Going to a show when you have no idea what you're going to see and coming away changed is the best.
