Our middle kid finished his third year at college and he was home for a week before heading back to work. He has discovered coffee, albeit not on the same level as our bunch of crazies. I dug out my vintage Krups Brewmaster Jr. for him to use and wished him well for the journeys that he will take with this fine machine...made in Germany when there was still an East/West and with the sensual coffee making process written on the box.

Guess we can file that one under "Things made better than they have to be"

Some notes from my roasting adventures:
    South/Central American: Me gusta
    Sumatra: No me gusta
Ethiopian: No se. Seems better the long it sits after roasting.

I've been trying as much variety as possible. Maybe it's not the best way to go about finding out what I like. Maybe I should get a larger quantity of one bean and refine my technique.

Your choice of beans and impressions mirror my own limited experience. If you find something you dig, hoard more!

No kidding, the drinkability of beans that have been sitting for a few days is dramatic. I'm very much enamoured with beans from Columbia. They are fantastic after 3 full days and even better after 4.

    ^^^ 1000x this.

So often overlooked, even by otherwise skilled roasters - I haven't roasted since I moved overseas, but currently get my beans from a roaster in Berlin (The Barn) who has impeccable taste and great sourcing, but they send their beans too early. I get them and then stick them aside for another 3-4 days before even touching them. When I was roasting regularly I found that most beans, especially north-african, only got better after the first 72hr and peaked somewhere around 8 days after roasting. A lot of the bitterness and cardboard tastes associated with young roasts go away with the degassing in the first few days.

Note however, that a good blonde roast is probably best tasted within 48hr... if you're into that sort of thing

The VSalon Coffee Exchange is in bidness.

June 26 is the proposed start date.

You will see a new sub-forum here, it is password protected ( https://www.velocipedesalon.com/forum/f60/ ). Why is there a members only sub-forum? Good question: Some personal info. (home addresses and shoe size etc.) will be safely stored here to make the task easier.

If you intend to roast coffee and participate please send me a note and I'll send the password.

Super excited to have a Quest M3 drum roaster incoming. I've fooled around on it, it's a full manual. Taking temp notes every 30 seconds while noting color and smell, was a lot to juggle the first go around. It'll get easier for sure, however I'm looking at hooking it up to artisan to visually see the curve. Right now I'm looking at the data like the Matrix, I can't se the pretty girl in the red dress yet. There's a local barista is just getting into mountain bikes so we're sharing knowledge. I won't be ready for prime time for a while, but would love to participate.

i'd like to get in on this. i don't plan on roasting for a while, as our house is still being built, and the apartment is crowded enough, but would gladly pay for small amounts of home roasted beans from members. my best god shots have always come from home roasted stuff from a friend.

Shoogs and Dustin, get into the private forum asap. We may take pity on Dustin and send some crumbs. Dustin, you do not around. That is one heck of a machine.

At Vsalon we enable with the finest.

Here is the machine I use for roasting. It is very very very manual and you will need to pay attention. After ruining about 10 lbs of perfectly good beans I'm now producing consistent well roasted coffee. With this rig you must have some method for cooling the beans. Check out my previous posts for my homemade rig...it's terrific.
The seller is very responsive and offers a lifetime warranty.

Josh...you need to post those pics on Home Depot's Facebook page and I bet that they subsidize your bean purchases for the next year or so.

You need to make sure that the Home Depot swag is in the forefront of the photos and do a Heisman type pose while roasting and cooling, perhaps on YouTube with the song Mr. Touchdown USA playing in the background. We can paraphrase some of the lyrics...

    They al-ways call him Mis-ter Touch-down,
They al-ways call him Mis-ter Team
He can roast and grind and brew,
Give him the beans and just look at what he can do.

    Hip, hip, hoo-ray for Mis-ter Touch-down,
    He's gon-na roast -em to-day.
So give a great big cheer for the he-ro of the year,
    MIS-TER TOUCH-DOWN, U.S.A.

    bean cooler.jpgQuest.jpg

I picked up this set up used (Quest M3 and a air scrubber/bean cooler) from a friend...he's getting into bikes and knows coffee well so we're sharing knowledge. After previously roasting at his house, last night was my first roast at home. The Quest is a nice machine, I've been impressed thus far. The bean cooler is stupid fast.

Roasted 2 Columbians (Tolima, and 8982) and a Brazil. Roasted to a 20% development time. I very much prefer a light/medium roast.
