I can't wait to hear about this.
I'm officially volunteering to send you a 1/2 lb of my Old Shoe blend.

It's been on my mind for quite some time. Especially since there isn't one coffee shop in the new city. Which blows my mind. In my opinion, the Gaggia is such a badass machine that the only legitimate upgrade is going big league. I debated heavily between dual boilers and heat exchange machines, but in the end, having the consistency of a temp-controlled dual boiler won out. Then it came down to: 3 years from now, I won't remember what the machine cost, but I'll still be enjoying the product. 10 years? Hopefully the same.
I just replaced the dispersion plate on the Gaggia today with a brass one. First shot, new beans, grinder adjusted on the fly...god shot. I think it knows.

Re: Espresso machines
If the baby sibling Quickmill I bought is any indication, the money spent will be quickly forgotten. And by quickly I mean as soon as you match the grind to the machine.

Re: Espresso machines
I picked up this beast from Mr Crumpton recently, the La Spaziale mini Vivaldi II.

He included a Virtuoso grinder that i find is not grinding quite fine enough. are you guys enjoying your Baratza Varios? I am looking at maybe upgrading to a beefier grinder because thats the key to good espresso. what are you guys loving in terms of home grinder for espresso only? id like to keep it under $600 and open to used or refurbed for sure.

I know this was the grinder to end all home grinders 10 years ago, has nothing changed? just had to check there wasn;t some new amazing grinder out there to supplant it. I worked on a commercial mazzer for a couple years, really amazing grinders

I also know nothing except everyone loves that Mazzer and I have nothing but raves about our MACAP M4.

Cool grinder. New to me. Are they reliable?

Re: Espresso machines
The Mini seems pretty bullet proof, and parts are readily available. Hard to look elsewhere.

Re: Espresso machines
Mazzer Mini is great, but definitely $.
I picked up a Rancilio Rocky three months ago and it's been faultless with my La Pavoni machine. Grinds precise+fine, it looks good, and it fits under a cabinet. Opted for doserless after hearing mixed reviews on the doser version. I think they're $350 new.

Re: Espresso machines
I'm in the prefer-doserless camp and if I were buying new I'd be taking a hard look at the ECM V-Titan, the Profitec T64, and various Ceado units. But I was recently given a Faema Contessa that works great, even if it has a doser, so I'm not in the market.

I worked on a commercial Nuovo simonelli for a few years and it was a great grinder. Id be angry if the daughter of the owner of Chris Coffee steered me wrong. she is using this grinder as her home grinder, and she has her choice of basically anything. now she could be lying or salesing, but thats a pretty good nod in the right direction. i may pick it up and see, if nothing else i prefer the look over the mini mazzer. but yes, im told this is a mini mazzer killer. it has a larger burrs, lower rpms, and similar pricing.

Re: Espresso machines
The eagle landed on Friday. Box was HUGE. And had to weigh close to 100lbs. Took everything I had to load it up in my 4Runner. Spent time today figuring out grind setting, etc etc. Took about 10 shots to start getting comfy. I'll tell you...the rotary pump is ridiculously quiet. Wifey didn't even realize I was pulling a shot while talking to her. As of now, that's the most impressive feature. As a whole, the machine a piece to look at. Very attractive. Feels good. That E61 group puts out some heat. I'll get some milk tomorrow and start working on that. Here I am at about shot number 7.

Re: Espresso machines
I've been very happy with my Vario. It gets quite a bit of use over the last year or so. I'm a fan because I can switch between espresso and French press grinds quickly and reliably. If I was buying a grinder specifically for espesso only I might loos elsewhere, but I'm quite pleased. It does grind several steps finer than the one you have.

thanks man, i think im gonna take the next step along as i have 2 grinders already that can do pour over work, including the virtuoso. i worked in the commercial barista side of things in Portlandia far too long to accept sub par grinding. i can make almost any crappy machine pull a decent shot, but ive never been able to pull a decent shot with inconsistent grinds.
Dustin, that machine looks legit, have a ton of fun with it.

Re: Espresso machines
The Mazzer Mini is still amazing, but the Rocket Fausto is pretty top notch.
I have a Rocket Apartamento and am using a Breville Smart Grinder Pro. The new version is good, the question is durability for 2-3 double per day. We'll see how it goes.

Re: Espresso machines
+1 on the rotary pump models. 10x nicer in every regard but size and price.
